Gallup and Stribling Orchids

will their agricultural acres be plowed under to make way for more overpriced condos that working Santa Barbarians and Carpinterians can't afford?
The subject property is a rare opportunity to acquire 1.5 Million square feet of greenhouse space on 45 pristine acres of agricultural land in Carpinteria, California.

This unique property has tremendous 101 Freeway presence and visibility which adds to the prestige of this asset. The property features a 300 gallon a minute well, a 2,000SF refrigeration area, and a 40,000SF packing warehouse. Currently, the property is used to cultivate , grow and sell orchids flowers on a mass level and also on an individual basis at the property's retail store. A buyer can continue to run the orchid business which would provide a great income stream or the buyer can produce a different product at the site. The property also has great long term potential as a future development site for commercial or residential use. - LoopNet

Outstanding in the Field

has their new website and new 2010 tour dates up.
Ten seasons of Outstanding in the Field. A new decade. What better way to celebrate than with a new look. We are very excited about the release of our new website. Our goal was to create an experience that makes the everyday fall away and takes you out to the field. Whether you wander around exploring every link or go straight to the event listings, we hope to provide you a view into both the world of our travels and the contributions of people joining us at the table.

2010 Tour Dates - Ready for Viewing!
We have over 50 confirmed events for you to start perusing on the site. There are several more events that are almost confirmed and will be posted before Saturday. If you don't see an event that you were expecting, don't worry, it will likely show up by early Friday.

You can become "outstanding in the field" on May 31 locally at Coleman Farms in Carpinteria

May 31, 2010
Coleman Farm , Carpinteria, CA
PRICE: $220.00
HOST FARMER: Bill & Romeo Coleman, Coleman Farm, Carpinteria
GUEST CHEF: Richard Mead,
Sage Restaurant, Newport Beach
TIME: 4:00PM

Chef Rich Mead and the Coleman Family Farm is a match made in heaven. Farmers Romeo and Bill Coleman have hosted several past Outstanding in the Field farm dinners. We once again look forward to what has become a yearly tradition. There is a lot growing here and Bill and Romeo always lead a fascinating walk around the grounds.

or May 29 at in Ojai at the Old Creek Ranch.

May 29, 2010
Old Creek Ranch, Ojai, CA
PRICE: $200.00
HOST FARMER: John Whitman & Michael Meagher,
Old Creek Ranch
GUEST CHEF: Tim Kilcoyne, The Sidecar Restaurant, Ventura
TIME: 4:00PM

Returning Outstanding chef Tim Kilcoyne of the Sidecar Restaurant in Ventura is enthusiastic about farms and local producers. When 2010 planning commenced Tim was sure to let us know he wanted to do it again. Last year Chef Tim joined us for a wonderful farm dinner with Phil McGrath of the McGrath Family Farm in Camarillo. This year we are heading out to the Ojai Valley North of L.A. for dinner in the vineyard at Old Creek Ranch. Talented winemaker Michael Meagher and owner John Whitman of Old Creek Ranch have joined us before, pouring wine at Earthtrine Farm, McGrath Farm and Wattles Farm. In 2010 we are off to visit their place. The beautiful Ojai Valley is set in a wide valley surrounded by tall mountains. Proximity to the coast and mountains gives this area consistently perfect Southern California weather.

One way cool event to attend would be the one on Catalina Island...with the cutie patootie chef, Curtis Stone.

June 29, 2010
Catalina Island Sea Cove, Catalina Island, CA
PRICE: $300.00
GUEST CHEF:
Curtis Stone, Los Angeles
TIME: 4:00PM

Chef Curtis Stone first came to our attention a few years back when we came across an Australian cooking show called "Surfing the Menu" with the concept of two chefs going out to field and ocean shore and cooking up a menu with local foods they found. Sounds a bit like Outstanding in the Field. Curtis contacted us recently and expressed excitement about participating as a 2010 guest chef. Since Curtis has got out and about quite a bit it seemed our first OITF event on Catalina Island would be the perfect match for a fellow wandering chef.

On the event day, you will take a short boat trip from the Avalon harbor, along the shores of Catalina, to a beautiful cove we have discovered. Our signature table will be set in the sand. Boat transportation will also be provided back to Avalon after the event.

Tickets will go on sale this Saturday, March 20th at 9 am PT/12 noon ET.

Growing Organically the Seeds of Knowledge

A school in Carpinteria plants the seed to a wonderful and innovative organic "healthy food program" that takes root within the community...and hopefully elsewhere.

....The student’s garden is just one example of how Palmisano’s small plot of land has tendrils that reach beyond the fence. The school’s horticulture class comes out every couple of days to work in the gardens. Veterinary science students wheel their stable sweepings up to the compost piles each day. Most important, the produce from the garden travels across campus to the cafeteria, where it appears in the lunches served each day, and into the culinary classrooms where students use it in their recipes.

Cordeiro see the tendrils reaching far beyond even these relationships.

...Cordeiro sees the school’s organic garden as a small, but pivotal, component in a much larger game plan. He is directly responsible for educating Carpinteria public school students between the ages of 3 — the district has three pre-schools — and 18. But the studies are clear. The earlier you start with children’s education and diet, the better their chances are of living a healthy life, completing high school and going on to college.

And, the children cannot be considered in separation from their families.

“If the family is strained, then the student is strained,” Cordeiro said.

“The food aspect, where we’re focusing (with the garden and culinary programs now) now, has to get pushed back under the umbrella of wellness.”

....The Carpinteria organic garden is partly funded through the s’Cool Food Initiative, an undertaking of the Santa Barbara-based Orfalea Foundation, which was created by Kinko’s founder Paul Orfalea and his wife, Natalie. According to foundation vice president Catherine Brozowski, Natalie Orfalea is the driving force behind the organizations.

...“This garden integrates our agricultural systems programs, our culinary programs, our cafeteria,” he said. “Orfalea helped us get gardens at our elementary schools. We just had the first farmers markets with produce from the schools.”- Noozhawk

For mixed salad in Santa Barbara

go no further than Shephard Farms booth at the Farmer's Market. I think the Santa Barbara Independent agrees, and has shown a literary spotlight on Tom Shepard and Shepard Farms.
A fifth-generation Santa Barbaran, Shepherd has been farming organically since 1973. The owner of Shepherd Farms started his first garden, which he intended for use as a community garden for members of All Saints by the Sea, on a plot of land near the church. Unfortunately, no one from the church community expressed interest, so Shepherd developed the space into his own personal garden. Over the next few years, he continued establish small farms all over Santa Barbara.

Tom Shepard also knows, very well, the truth to the catch phrase "No Farms. No Food" and the benefits of being "organic."

Shepherd is passionate about promoting the idea of protecting Santa Barbara’s precious farmland. “What are we going to do when we have no farms left and all we have is houses and malls covering the most fertile land in our country, maybe even world?” he demanded.

Shepherd has always been very conscious about health issues, and started farming on his own out of concern over the abundance of chemicals on the majority of mass-produced foods. He swears by the high nutritional value of local produce, which retains more of its content when eaten fresh.

“The food loses vitality when it sits around for a few days,” Shepherd said. “And when it comes from Mexico or Argentina, it’s just dead. It’s filler. It’s like chips.”

It's Saturday morning...and it's Farmer's Market day. I'm off to get some of Tom Shepard's mix of greeny goodness. How 'bout you?

Avocado Festival Time

Awards to Avocados
Originally uploaded by santa barbarian.

We here in Santa Barbara LOVE our Avocados in so many ways!

Carpinteria's AvoFest has been going deliciously strong for 22 years!

Well, Santa Barbara County is the third largest avocado producer in North America, with Carpinteria being a major contributor. It seemed like a natural food festival in the making. Why have the Festival the first weekend in October? Oddly enough, statistics show that October is one of the sunniest months of the year with the least amount of rainfall.

And there it began...the California Avocado Festival.

And they have had some terrific posters in the past...pick one for your kitchen wall!

Avocado facts you may not know...
  • Spanish conquistadors discovered that avocado seeds yield a milky fluid that turns red when exposed to air. They used this indelible natural ink in documents that are preserved to this day.
  • Sailors in the early 18th century relied on avocados for "midshipman's butter," spreading the creamy flesh on their otherwise hard biscuits.
  • Bill Maher starred in a movie called "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death"
The two hot tamales, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger have created special recipes for the California Avocado Commission. Search for their culinary creations here.
