Silvergreens Healthy School Lunch Delivery Program

Silvergreens by rosidae

is looking for some help.
Silvergreens Downtown is expanding our healthy school lunch delivery program and looking for a committed person to join our team. Must have restaurant experience, be fluent in English, reliable, dedicated, and fast-moving. Your driving record must be absolutely clean and you must have a large delivery vehicle in good working condition. You must also be a tremendous multi-tasker and handle stressful situations well, in addition to being able to lift crates of food and Catering equipment. This position will be Monday through Friday from 9am-Noon with ability to gain more hours in-store if you have desire and ability. You must be committed from August until mid-June and be able to work all weekdays during that time (except school holidays). This is a position of great responsibility since you are helping prepare and deliver hundreds of school lunches daily. After bagging and organizing all food according to school and grade you then load up our delivery vehicles (or your own large vehicle) and deliver to a couple of schools from Goleta to Carpinteria each day. When you get to the schools you unload, organize, and display our food and then head out to the next school and repeat the procedure. Customer service is crucial. Please only apply if you meet all of the above criteria and can excel in this fast-pace environment. When we post positions like this we typically get flooded with responses so please excuse us if we do not respond to each applicant.

Silvergreens Lunch Program serves the following schools:
  • St. Raphael School
  • Our Lady of Mount Carmel School
  • The Howard School
  • Santa Barbara Christian School
  • Bishop Diego High School
  • Montessori Center School
  • Santa Barbara Middle School
  • Notre Dame School

Growing Organically the Seeds of Knowledge

A school in Carpinteria plants the seed to a wonderful and innovative organic "healthy food program" that takes root within the community...and hopefully elsewhere.

....The student’s garden is just one example of how Palmisano’s small plot of land has tendrils that reach beyond the fence. The school’s horticulture class comes out every couple of days to work in the gardens. Veterinary science students wheel their stable sweepings up to the compost piles each day. Most important, the produce from the garden travels across campus to the cafeteria, where it appears in the lunches served each day, and into the culinary classrooms where students use it in their recipes.

Cordeiro see the tendrils reaching far beyond even these relationships.

...Cordeiro sees the school’s organic garden as a small, but pivotal, component in a much larger game plan. He is directly responsible for educating Carpinteria public school students between the ages of 3 — the district has three pre-schools — and 18. But the studies are clear. The earlier you start with children’s education and diet, the better their chances are of living a healthy life, completing high school and going on to college.

And, the children cannot be considered in separation from their families.

“If the family is strained, then the student is strained,” Cordeiro said.

“The food aspect, where we’re focusing (with the garden and culinary programs now) now, has to get pushed back under the umbrella of wellness.”

....The Carpinteria organic garden is partly funded through the s’Cool Food Initiative, an undertaking of the Santa Barbara-based Orfalea Foundation, which was created by Kinko’s founder Paul Orfalea and his wife, Natalie. According to foundation vice president Catherine Brozowski, Natalie Orfalea is the driving force behind the organizations.

...“This garden integrates our agricultural systems programs, our culinary programs, our cafeteria,” he said. “Orfalea helped us get gardens at our elementary schools. We just had the first farmers markets with produce from the schools.”- Noozhawk

Morgan Spurlock - Nice Guy!

Morgan Spurlock - Nice Guy!

Really nice guy. Super funny. I had a chance to write up a little follow up in our local weekly, The Independent.

And, talking about providing school lunches to our kids, Santa Barbara schools were the "recipients" of beef "produced" by the Westland Meat Company. You know, the "recall" beef place.

While praising the release of the school information, Representative Rosa DeLauro, Democrat from Connecticut, said the Department of Agriculture should also release a complete list of retail stores that received the recalled beef.

The list of school districts that received the beef is available at an agency Web site.
