Not your mama's hospital tapioca pudding....

Restaurant News is reporting that hospitals are upping their foodservice with improved dining experiences.
“The trend in restaurants is that folks are trying to cater menus to healthier, fresher options, and given that we’re in health care, it was important for us,” said Gina Weldy, vice president of real estate for Northwestern Memorial. “In the work environment we’re in now, people eat three meals a day near the office. These concepts give us the ability to offer that.”

Those objectives for the hospital align nicely with a fast-casual restaurant’s operating conditions, Matros said.

“I like that it’s a 24-hour environment,” he said. “While we’re not 24-hour, there are people [at the hospital] all the time, during [our] breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack [dayparts]. For the people working the midnight shift, their breakfast might be at 7 o’clock. It’s not just doctors and nurses, either. There are lots of support staff, biotech sales reps and pharmaceutical sales reps.” - NRN
We here in Santa Barbara know that Cottage Hospital has some terrific food served up at a seriously good price and, in addition, are trying to source local.  (If you have a back issue of Edible Santa Barbara from Spring of 2011, look for the article on Cottage's Farmers Market.

Where's Chef Jamie West this week?

The former San Ysidro Ranch chef has really been bouncing around the past couple of years.

In October 2012, he was named Exec Chef of retirement facility, Valle Verde.
In May 2013, he was named Exec Chef of retirement facility, Casa Dorinda.
He was recently named General Manager of the yet to be completed Oliver's (the old Peabody's) on Coast Village Road.

Perhaps the new eatery is looking to bring in a more, shall we say, mature clientele.

Marmalade Cafe Santa Barbara

What seems to be happening? Are they going to hang on in La Cumbre Plaza?  Rumours of cutting of hours of operation and the letting go of staff are circulating.

Did the relatively new Panera Bread opening up leave nothing but customer crumbs for Marmalade?

The New Mattei's Tavern

gets a nod from the Latte Times' S. Irene Virbila
Mattei’s Tavern, the Los Olivos restaurant that has been around since 1886, has just reopened after a hiatus between owners. Brothers Matt and Jeff Nichols ran the place as Brother’s Restaurant at Mattei’s Tavern for years, but when they lost their lease last year, they moved to another location in town and opened the restaurant Sides Hardware and Shoes.

Now Charles and Ali Banks of Terroir Selections, former owners of Screaming Eagle and now involved with Sandhi, Mayacamas, Mulderbosch and Leviathan wineries, have purchased Mattei’s Tavern. After some sprucing up, the landmark restaurant reopened Saturday

...(Chef Robbie) Wilson plans on not one, but two menus at Mattei’s Tavern. The first, called 1886, features traditional dishes such as beef tartar, campfire trout and wood-fired chicken. The other, called 2013--“inspirations from Los Olivos”--lists dishes such as grilled octopus with scarlet runner beans and preserved lemons, smoked lamb’s neck with refried cannellini beans and salsa verde marmalade, or halibut with lemon ash and olive “debris.” - LA Times

Make reservations on Open Table.

And follow Mattei's and Chef Wilson on Twitter...

Anchor Woodfire Kitchen

is getting some great press!

Opened in late 2012, Anchor Woodfire Kitchen is a testament to chef Jason Tuley's passion for local flavors and ingredients. Santa Barbara signatures like chanterelle mushrooms, sea urchin and ridge back shrimp dominate the constantly changing daily menus. Also popular are Tuley's house-made charcuterie, ricotta and pickles. And you can't miss the pizza - a wood-burning stove near the center of the restaurant delivers crisp, irregularly shaped pies with a nice, wood-fired flavor.

You can ask any of the staff where your food came from; they'll be happy to tell you. The Anchor website even has a page that lists their purveyors, with categories for farmers, seafood and dairy and meats. - USA Today Travel

India House Restaurant is for sale

Looks like it has been listed on BizBen.

Current establishment India House invites you to explore the vast possibilities. Located in the heart of historical downtown Santa Barbara and just couple of blocks from Sterns Warf, a unique opportunity for the entrepreneurial restaurateur. Many popular night spots surround India House, including 99Cents next door and Velvet Jones across the street.

The existing dining space allows seating for 165 people, but there is an area in the back which could make a nice garden area with space for an additional 100 people. The retail area has a long walkway, storeroom and warehouse in the back. The warehouse could potentially be used as another storeroom. The entryway doors and windows, patio, bathrooms, and kitchen are newly built two years ago. Many other recent improvements have also been made.

The listing price includes all kitchen fixtures, plates, cookware, and edible stock. Beer and Wine License 41 included in asking price. Retail merchandise is negotiable at additional cost.
