Patxi's Pizza coming to Santa Barbara

Patxi's Pizza (pronounced pah-cheese), a popular Chicago deep-dish and Italian thin crust mini-chain (Bay Area and Denver) is set to land at 515 State Street (the former Territory Ahead space) in the Spring of 2014.

Hooray! It’s National Cheese Pizza Day!

They apparently have baked dough styled with four types of mozzarella and 30+ toppings. Mmmmmmm. 'Za-riffic!

Anchor Woodfire Kitchen

is getting some great press!

Opened in late 2012, Anchor Woodfire Kitchen is a testament to chef Jason Tuley's passion for local flavors and ingredients. Santa Barbara signatures like chanterelle mushrooms, sea urchin and ridge back shrimp dominate the constantly changing daily menus. Also popular are Tuley's house-made charcuterie, ricotta and pickles. And you can't miss the pizza - a wood-burning stove near the center of the restaurant delivers crisp, irregularly shaped pies with a nice, wood-fired flavor.

You can ask any of the staff where your food came from; they'll be happy to tell you. The Anchor website even has a page that lists their purveyors, with categories for farmers, seafood and dairy and meats. - USA Today Travel

Personal Neapolitan Pizzeria

will soon open up on State Street where the old Taj Restaurant used to be. (905 State Street)

Now...keep in mind...if this is a true Neapolitan pizza joint, the pizza's will be a little smaller, little more "charred", minimally topped, whole pies (no slices) and well, a little "liquidly" in the middle. Oh, and they cook up really fast as the ovens are "crazy hot."

Something like this:

Ca Dario Pizzeria?

Rumour has it that a pizzeria idea is being cooked up just a couple doors down from Ca' Dario restaurant on the corner of Anacapa and Victoria.

Let's hope that some of the logistical snafus have been worked out as rumour also has it that there are some little snags with local regulations.

California Pizza Kitchen chain to be sold

Not sure how this will affect our local CPK.
California Pizza Kitchen, known for such ambitious offerings as the 1,440-calorie Tostada Pizza, will be acquired by Golden Gate Capital, an investment company that owns the Romano's Macaroni Grill and On The Border chains. The deal is expected to be worth about $740 million.

CPK has been looking for a buyer for about a year. The company has been suffering from a slowdown in sales, despite adding less expensive, smaller portions of some products last year, along with an aggressive international expansion strategy that has taken it to India, South Korea and other countries. This isn't the first time the company has been sold; the founders sold it to Pepsico in 1992, only to buy it back several years later. - The Consumerist

'Za can Save the World!

Pizza Fusion that is!
.....it’s not a pizza with Asian ingredients piled on top. It’s a natural and organic pizza franchise giving back to the environment with eco-friendly operations. The menu includes sandwiches, wraps, salads, desserts, beer and wine—all made with fresh, all-natural and organic ingredients. But the house specialty is organic, gourmet pizza made with high-quality toppings and a variety of crusts, such as gluten-free, or multi-grain. Vegans aren’t forgotten with the Very Vegan Pizza Pie and those with lactose intolerance can order to their hearts’ content with the Follow Your Heart Soy Mozzarella option.

Every detail of the operation is positive for the earth: Each franchise uses eco-friendly cleaners to sanitize their stores; provides eco-apparel, such as organic cotton uniforms to their employees; uses recycled products whenever possible and recycles all of the wastes; and uses company-owned hybrids as delivery vehicles. Even the company’s website is hosted by a ‘Green Web Hosting’ service provider that uses renewable energy wind power to offset the energy usage of its servers. Pizza Fusion began franchising in early January and already has a number of stores opening across Florida with plans to compete nationally in the pizza and organic markets. - SpecialtyFood.com

stop by their website....say "thanks" and maybe order up a "pie to go".

A "honey" of a recipe

But this chain of pizza joints might have to make some changes to their recipe for success...

Beau Jo's pizza chain in Colorado is known for baking honey into the crust of its pies. They even provide extra honey on the table for diners to spread on leftover crusts for dessert. - NPR
First we start with your choice of crust. Then we apply our famous hand rolled edge to keep the abundant portions in place and provide you a built-in dessert created with honey. Next, we pour on your choice of sauces and pile it high with the finest ingredients, then finally smother your "Pie" with selected cheeses.
They go through 16 tons of honey per year. Holy Beeswax!

But the trouble is, bees are dying off in huge numbers...and no one knows why. It will have an huge impact on our country's economy and what foods will be available.
In 24 states throughout the country, beekeepers have gone through similar shocks as their bees have been disappearing inexplicably at an alarming rate, threatening not only their livelihoods but also the production of numerous crops, including California almonds, one of the nation's most profitable.

A Cornell University study has estimated that honeybees annually pollinate more than $14 billion worth of seeds and crops in the United States, mostly fruits, vegetables and nuts. "Every third bite we consume in our diet is dependent on a honeybee to pollinate that food," said Zac Browning, vice president of the American Beekeeping Federation.

The bee losses are ranging from 30 to 60 percent on the West Coast, with some beekeepers on the East Coast and in Texas reporting losses of more than 70 percent; beekeepers consider a loss of up to 20 percent in the off-season to be normal. - SFGate
