The Santa Barbara Main Post Office

Main Post Office by santa barbarian
Main Post Office, a photo by santa barbarian on Flickr.
...In 2006, in what looks like an attempt to bust the Postal Workers' Union, George Bush signed into law the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006. This law required the Postal Service to pre-fund 100 percent of its entire future obligations for 75 years of health benefits to its employees – and not only do it, but do it within ten years. No other organization, public or private, has to pre-fund 100 percent of its future health benefits.

...The transparent purpose of this law, which was pushed heavily by industry lobbyists, was to break a public sector union and privatize the mail industry. Before the 2006 act, the postal service did one thing, did it well, and, minus the need to generate profits and bonuses for executives, did it cheaply. It paid for itself and was not a burden to taxpayers.
So definitely write your congressman and ask him to roll back Bush's idiotic law, and at least give the Post Office a chance to sink or swim on its own. - Rolling Stone

They're closing the MAIN BRANCH POST OFFICE?

That is just NOT RIGHT.

It is the heart of the city.

"US Postal Service employees in Santa Barbara were notified Thursday that the main post office on Anacapa Street is closing as a cost-cutting measure and that postal service officials are looking for retail space elsewhere."

Tom Shepherd Farm leaving Carpinteria?

Rumour on the foodie street is that Tom Shepherd will be closing down the Carpinteria farm.
Yule Lake, Carpinteria – 6701 Casitas Pass Rd
Located on Highway 192 at the base of Shepherd Mesa, this forty acre farm sits on the richest alluvial soil in all of the Carpinteria Valley. The mild climate is perfect for tender salad greens, sweet strawberries, root vegetables, and all row crops. It also includes an avocado and persimmon orchard
CSA Sign ups are paused until further notice.
No more amazing "salad mix?"
Say it ain't so!

The Habit Burger Grill

has some "off the menu" options. I think everything is better "Santa Barbara Style," quite frankly.
The Habit Burger Grill, a California-based restaurant brand, announced today their "off-menu" or never-before promoted menu items including, the "Santa Barbara Style" Double Char Cheese burger on grilled sourdough bread with all the fixings like mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, plus grilled onions and ripe avocados; and their "Half & Half", a half order of French fries and onion rings that Habit regulars have been ordering for years and now every Habit customer can, too.  These items are not limited time only and are always available.

"We are excited to make public just a few of our menu items that Habit regulars have been ordering for years. The Santa Barbara style double Char with cheese and avocados goes right back to our Santa Barbara roots, and is one of our most popular items even though it's never officially been on the menu," says Russ Bendel, President and CEO of Habit Restaurants, LLC. "There really is no limit to the number of 'off-menu' items that can be ordered at The Habit since we have such a wide range of ingredients and always custom-make your meal to order."

In addition to the Santa Barbara style Charburger and the "Half and Half" side dish, a few of the more popular "off-menu" items include any Charburger wrapped in lettuce and a Caesar salad with fresh, grilled albacore and teriyaki sauce.

The Habit is best known for their made-to-order "Charburgers" grilled over an open flame and their friendly, inviting service. They use only fresh, quality ingredients, and always live up to their motto: "There's No Substitute For Quality!"

Tap Thai Restaurant

looks like it's a "goner"
You can save significant time (up to a year) and money (up to $150,000) by buying an already equipped, building and health department approved restaurant space. Don't go through the long expensive processes of starting from scratch to put in your own kitchen and the stressful and time consuming process of working with the health department and city to get it approved. We've done all the work for you already.  -

(Alex) Weinstein said he is moving to San Francisco to pursue a new job.

“Although I have loved my time living in Santa Barbara, and especially being a proud business owner, there comes a time for change and new adventures,” he wrote. “I may no longer be living in Santa Barbara, but its beauty, people and community will always be in my heart.” - Noozhawk

The French Festival is BACK!

We are happy to announce that the French Festival will now be in the capable hands of two fine Santa Barbara non-profit organizations: Speaking of Stories and Center Stage Theater. They've got show biz in their blood, and have been part of the Festival for many years (vending the beer, wine and Perrier). French Festival founder Steve Hoegerman will continue to play an active role in the Festival as advisor and consultant. And will still be the emcee on the Moulin Rouge Stage and at the Poodle Parade. So if you've missed his jokes, you'll have a chance to hear them again!

The transfer of the Festival to this new group will allow the Festival to grow into the future. Our goal is for the Festival to continue for years and years. We do NOT want to make any major changes: we want the same joyous Festival you have known and loved to be here forever. It will be the same great Festival, and now all the proceeds will benefit these two great community organizations helping keep the arts alive in Santa Barbara throughout the year.

This summer's Festival will be a triumphant return and we are excited to celebrate Bastille Day with all of Santa Barbara in beautiful Oak Park on July 14 & 15!
