Four decades ago, restaurateur and food activist Alice Waters was at the forefront of the now flourishing locally grown, organic food movement. Her Berkeley-based restaurant, Chez Panisse, has become one of the most famous dining spots in America, known for changing its menu daily to reflect what's in season and for sourcing ingredients from local farmers.
But as a child, Waters almost never went to restaurants — and was extremely picky about what she'd actually put in her mouth."My mother made a lot of things because she thought they'd be healthy for us," she tells Fresh Air's Terry Gross. "There were some very unfortunate experiences with whole wheat bread and bananas. I always tried to get rid of that sandwich and eat one of my friends' lunches." - listen to the show here.

In 1915, four Jordano brothers opened a small market in Santa Barbara. More store openings soon followed, and by the 1950s the family-owned business was operating the first chain of supermarkets on the Central Coast. Jordano's stores were known for high quality products, innovative merchandising, and superior customer service. The company grew to become the area's largest wholesale distributor of foodand beverages, and one of the 50 largest companies of its kind in the United States.
Today, Jordano's is still family and employee owned, very proud of its Santa Barbara heritage, and committed to supporting the local community.

Nestled on a quiet corner on upper De la Vina Street, you may or may not have noticed Mimosa. For the past 27 years, the restaurant has been serving some of the best French cuisine found in Santa Barbara. This week — Tuesday through Thursday — it will celebrate with a 27th anniversary special: a three-course pix fixe meal with a glass of wine for $27.
The restaurant opened in 1983 under Ann and Camille Schwartz, but since 2000 it has been run by Chris and Derrick Melton, who worked in the kitchen in the 1990s before moving to San Francisco to experience myriad other styles of cooking. They bought the restaurant from the Schwartzes in 2005. - Noozhawk
