I miss my Sundays

at the Vedanta Temple in La Crescenta.
Spent some wonderful mornings enveloped in musical spirit. It was so wonderful...except when hiking as meditation and running across the left over hind leg of a deer. (There are Mountain Lions living around there.)

Happy 60th Anniversary, Gelson's!

Gelson's Market by jericl cat
Gelson's Market, a photo by jericl cat on Flickr.

Designed by Stiles Clements, the shiny new Gelson’s Market was modernistic in design and had the air of a building set in a tropic land. Inside, from roof to floor, the market’s front had a glassed instead of a cement front, an industry first. It was completely air-conditioned and heated. Huge circulating fans and giant heaters guaranteed a complete circulation of clean, fresh air of proper temperature every five minutes. Specially designed fixtures in all departments afforded ample display of the peerless selection of items which Gelson’s handled.

Spacious aisles — which would become a Gelson’s hallmark — and large shopping carts were available to make shoppers’ selection of merchandise a pleasure. The first Gelson’s also set the stage for what would become Gelson’s tradition of exemplary meat and seafood. The store had an ultra-modern, self-service Meat Department, with stainless steel and enamel cases running the building’s full length. Behind these cases, in full view of the customers — when you’ve got it, flaunt it! — was the meat cutting and wrapping room. - Gelson's

Is almost Top Chef Richard Blais

trailblazing a restaurant concept from Atlanta to Los Angeles? His tweet says it may be so.

I wouldn't mind it being an unusual concept...like bacon shakes!

More H2Woes from the Golden "Crispy" State

but the whole country, not just California, better wake up and smell the arugala.
...Here are some not-so-fun facts: California's agricultural sector grows approximately one-third of the nation's food supply and is nourished by diverted rivers and streams filled yearly by runoff from its prodigious sierra nevada snowpack, as well as groundwater pumping and other less-reliable methods. that snowpack -- which once sparked the first, but not the last, water war that helped transform a semi-arid Los Angeles into an unsustainable oasis less populous than only new york city -- is disappearing fast....

To make matters worse, a crushing drought, now well into its third year, has made simply everything problematic. In California's Central Valley, home to a majority of the State's agricultural output, farmers are leaving
hundreds of thousands of acres fallow, and the resultant economic depression is having a domino effect that could cost California $1 billion to start and is causing residents of a one-time food powerhouse to go hungry. - Alternet

Bernie Madoff's criminal enterprise affects LA foodies

The famed Nancy Silverton was one of those who sunk her moolah into Bernie's ponzi enterprise.
It's a good thing Nancy Silverton still has her day job.

The La Brea Bakery founder and queen of L.A.'s restaurant scene is among the legions of investors who've lost their fortunes in the alleged $50-billion fraud attributed to New York financier Bernard L. Madoff.

Silverton said she learned the bad news from her father when she called him at his office as she was driving up to Napa Valley about two weeks ago.

"He said, 'I want to tell you something. Everything's gone. We lost everything.' " - Los Angeles Times
Here's hoping that Nancy's sister Gail didn't lose everything along with her, as Gail is part owner of The Gelato Bar which supplies their amazing gelato to Spoon, here in Santa Barbara.

Good Food on KCRW

Has an interesting show today, including one segment on Aguas Frescas.
Aguas frescas (Spanish for "fresh waters") are a fresh juice drink whose popularity in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean has finally reached the U.S. Their irresistibly refreshing and simple combination of fruits, sugar and water make them the perfect antidote to the heat of summer or to complement a spicy meal. Jimmy Shaw, owner of the Loteria Grill (at the Farmer's Market) recently brought a sampling of aguas frescas to the Good Food studios, where he discussed his favorite flavors for this thirst-quenching drink.

Curtis Stone - Honorary Chef, Dine Out LA 2007

Dine Out Los Angeles is a one-day fundraising event, where Los Angeles area restaurants donate 20% or more of their day's proceeds to Aid For AIDS to help prevent homelessness and hunger for individuals and families impoverished and disabled by HIV/AIDS.

So on Thursday April 19th, 2007, for breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurants from West Hollywood to Silverlake to Hollywood to Long Beach to Pasadena to West Los Angeles to Beverly Hills to the Valley and more will be donating monies from meals purchased that day. One day. One meal (or more). It is so simple and delicious!

Great food. Great cause.

And remember....dress up. You just never know who you'll run into at the market...or restaurant.

Yamashiro and Magic Castle up for sale?

Just say OH...NO.
A famous piece of Hollywood is up for sale. The owners of the Magic Castle and the Japanese mansion that houses the Yamashiro restaurant are looking for someone interested in acquiring the landmarks and the surrounding 10-acre hilltop property. - sfgate
more at CRBE and Curbed LA
For 88 years Yamashiro has watched over the history of Hollywood. It has witnessed the birth of the film industry, the glamour of Hollywood’s “Golden Age”, the difficult times of war with Japan, and the current period of intense interest in Eastern cultures. Yamashiro started as a fabulous private estate and is now open to the public as a unique restaurant and public gardens.

Landscaping at Yamashiro was a $2 million effort and resulted in California’s foremost Japanese gardens. Hillside terraces were filled with 30,000 varieties of trees and shrubs, waterfalls, hundreds of goldfish, and even a private zoo of exotic birds and monkeys. Miniature bronze houseboats floated along a maze of tiny canals through a miniature Japanese village.- Yamashiro History
Eater LA says that Yamashiro isn't going anywhere...for now. Let's hope that Yamashiro will continue to watch over Hollywood's History. I have some reservations over it's survival....but please make some of your own.
