WhoDidily Cupcakes coming to downtown Santa Barbara

WhoDidily cupcakes of Montecito is taking their baking racks on the road and opening up a new storefront in Paseo Nuevo, in the space where the departed Cheese Shop was.

WhoDidily has gotten lots of press in the past couple of years. They were featured on FoodNetwork's Cupcake Wars last year. Then before that, they had a little legal rumble with the 800lb gorilla of the cupcake world, Sprinkles. (That was when WhoDidily was known as Sprinkled Pink Cupcake Couture.)

The local cupcake batter battle gets a little heated. We'll see how the crumbs settle with Crushcakes and Bella Dolce seeing new competition in their midst.

Bella Dolce's signs are gone

and the business card holder on the door is no more. Sadly it looks like the retail frontage in Arlington Court for Bella Dolce is not "cooking" along. Which is a shame, because their cupcakes rocked!

Belle Dolce Bakery...set to open?

Pink Lemonade Cupcakes
Originally uploaded by santa barbarian.

Rumour has it that Belle Dolce Bakery will FINALLY open the doors to a retail store soon in the Arlington Court. (Just 1/2 block away from Crushcakes Cupcakes.)

And, although Eileen does sublimely delicious cupcakes, she does so much more....

Bella Dolce is a Santa Barbara catering company specializing in beautiful cookies, petite sweets, luscious cupcakes and exquisite wedding cakes.

Bella Dolce was established in 1997 by Pastry Chef Eileen Randall Cook.

....Eileen left Santa Barbara for the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and a pastry internship at Campton Place Hotel. She graduated from the CCA Chef Program in 1989. She then moved to Los Angeles where she mastered breakfast pastry at the Hotel Bel Air, did food styling for print and film, catering for the stars, taught cooking classes and managed the cooking school at Montana Mercantile in Santa Monica.

Since returning to Santa Barbara in 1992 Eileen was the pastry chef at Brigitte’s (now Opal) and Executive Pastry Chef at the Wine Cask. There she was responsible for the design and production of desserts for the Wine Cask Restaurant and catering company, The University Club and Polo Club.

Yet Another Cupcake Place in Santa Barbara

Sweet Buttercup, although it seems to be web-based, is having an open house on Saturday, September 27th from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. for sampling of their frosting topped wares. Will I see you there?

Sweet Buttercup
2611 De la Vina, Santa Barbara, CA - 805-967-8160
Sweet Buttercup is a web-based cupcakery that specializes in custom gourmet cupcakes and cookies. We use premium ingredients such as cocoa from France, Belgium chocolate, and Madagascar-bourbon vanilla. We take great care to provide a product that tastes as delicious as it looks. All of our product is scratch-baked and decorated to match any event or theme.
They look pretty good....the cuppycakes got rave reviews from The Cupcakes Club.
Looks like Santa Barbara is in the midst of "cupcake frosting wars!"
May I can entice Cakespy to come investigate and report.

Seems that Political Shenanigans

can be good for bakery sales.
The Milford bakery that riffed on a fruitless search for Jimmy Hoffa is now tackling the text message scandal involving Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty, his former chief of staff.

Cookies shaped like cell phones and decorated with text messages saying "Busted" and "I'm sorry" went on sale for $1.75 Thursday at the Milford Baking Co., said owner Laura Hedwig.

"We wanted to have some fun with it," she said.

...In Milford, Hedwig sold thousands of cupcakes with green hands poking out of chocolate frosting in 2006 when the FBI was searching for Hoffa's remains on a horse farm in the community. - FreePress

Cupcakes Crushed my heart....

Crushcakes Cupcakes recently opened up here in Santa Barbara. I was really excited to have a little "cupcakery" opening up near work. The ladies at work were excited about having a little taste treat just around the corner. And, when it opened, were were all over it like frosting on a cupcake.

We were ALL disappointed. $3.25 for a small, dry not very tasty lump. We tried them again a second time. Same thing, only this time, the frosting was liquidating and running off one type of the cupcakes. I would NEVER sell anything that looked like that.

There were handfuls of young, blonde girls in the back with tight fitting black "crushcake cupcakes" t-shirts, reading a recipe book and working diligently to put out product, but I hate to say, they were not succeeding. Might be nice to have people who know how to bake back in the kitchen? Right now it seems that the only "cupcakes" the shop was really concentrating on marketing were of a young female variety.

The space, like the product, is bland and lacking in warmth, taste and visual appeal. I usually believe in "third time's a charm", but after my two experiences with their product, I won't be back for a third, neither will the other ladies from work.

Guess we'll just have to wait until Bella Dolce Bakery opens up and see what they will offer.

Welcome to Cupcake Capital of California!

Just when you thought it safe to plan on a diet for the New Year....word of more delicious delicacies opening up in Santa Barbara, soon. But, really, in our minds....not soon enough!

Set to open up this Spring in Arlington Plaza on State Street...right across from the historic Arlington Theatre...
BELLA DOLCE!
Bella Dolce is a Santa Barbara catering company specializing in beautiful cookies, petite sweets, luscious cupcakes and exquisite wedding cakes.

....Pastry Chef Eileen Randall Cook was raised in Santa Barbara and realized at an early age that if someone would pay you money to make cookies when you grew up, that was the thing to do.

Eileen left Santa Barbara for the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and a pastry internship at Campton Place Hotel.

Cupcakes Coming! Cupcakes Coming! to Santa Barbara

The cupcake craze is expanding to our little local foodie scene. The funky little space that was once inhabited by our beloved Nicky's (Hair Salon/Gift shoppe galore) is prepping itself to be a little cupcakery. Crushcakes Cupcakery to be exact.
Crushcakes Cupcakery was a dream realized by Shannon Feld. Shannon previously originated and operated Bitterman’s Deli. One of her favorite memories from that experience was all the happiness she brought to her loyal customers through her passion for food and award winning customer service.

Since leaving Bitterman's, Shannon has greatly missed the energy and excitement of sharing her love for food with Santa Barbara. For as long as she can remember, Shannon has been in search of the perfect dessert. While others enter into a restaurant looking for the ideal wine pairing for their meal, Shannon instead asks first for the dessert list. To Shannon, the ultimate satisfaction can only be found in that decadent final course. To satisfy her own cravings, Shannon has created an amazing dessert in her scratch made cupcakes and she is excited to share them with Santa Barbara at Crushcakes Cupcakery.
The menu is looking interesting....
  • peace cake - make cupcakes not war with this cool vanilla bean cake topped with wild tie-dye frosting and a chocolate peace sign
  • crushcake - our signature red velvet cake topped with a chocolate heart dipped into sour cream frosting
  • bananas foster- crushed banana cake topped with vanilla frosting and rum caramel swirls
  • raspberry kir royale - juicy raspberry cake topped with bubbly champagne frosting
Now...if we can get cakespy to escape Seattle for a little bit and come down to our fair city and give a little "taste"-up of the place when it opens or maybe we should just ship her up some.
