In a memo that he sent to all employees last month, obtained by Mother Jones, Mackey concedes that Whole Foods is actually sinking under the weight of its health care expenses. In the past seven years, he writes, the cost of the company's health care plan as a percentage of its sales has gone up 60 percent. This year's tab is "equal to about 10% of the total Team Member compensation of $2 billion," Mackey complains. "On average over the past three years we have spent more on health care costs than we have made in total net profits!" - MotherJones

Supermarket chain Whole Foods has set a goal to reduce energy consumed per square foot 25 percent by 2015.
Additionally, the chain said it is stepping up efforts in the areas of wind energy, on-site renewable energy, and aggressive green building, advanced refrigeration and transportation practices, according to a press release.
Whole Foods points to its Santa Barbara, Calif., location as one that couldprovide an example to others. That store uses 45 percent less energy than a comparable store nearby. - Environmental Leader

Cork is a renewable, recyclable material that doesn’t belong in our landfills. What to do? Bring your corks to our stores, drop them in the handy Cork ReHarvest boxes and feel good again!
....Whole Foods Market partners with Cork ReHarvest to make it easy for wine enthusiasts to properly dispose of cork at all of our 292 stores in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. Since 2008, the nonprofit and Rainforest Alliance-endorsed Cork ReHarvest has led the cork recycling movement in North America, helping to collect and recycle some of the 13 billion natural corks that are produced each year. Cork recycling helps to reduce demand placed on cork plantations while maintaining the delicate ecosystem of the Mediterranean forests and helps thousands of producers maintain a sustainable income to support their families. - WholeFoods blog

but why are they selling Chilean Sea Bass?
But Gerald Leape, the vice president for marine conservation at the National Environmental Trust in Washington, the nonprofit group that started the “take a pass on Chilean sea bass” campaign in 2001 among chefs, restaurants and markets nationwide, said he was concerned that the return of the fish to Whole Foods could be misread by consumers.
“They may think that all Chilean sea bass are O.K. now, and that’s not true,” he said. “The certified fishery accounts for only 10 percent of the total catch. Chilean sea bass are still overfished and depleted.”
Peter Hoffman, the chef and owner of Savoy in SoHo, who does not serve Chilean sea bass, said Whole Foods was sending a confusing message. “It boils down to oversimplification,” he said. “Sustainability is hard to understand, and now the consumer might think it applies to all Chilean sea bass. Other markets might put up similar signs, even though their fish does not come from that fishery. How many places that said they sold wild salmon actually turned out to be selling farmed once the fish were tested?” - NYTimes

Health care is a service that we all need, but just like food and shelter it is best provided through voluntary and mutually beneficial market exchanges. A careful reading of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution will not reveal any intrinsic right to health care, food or shelter. That's because there isn't any. This "right" has never existed in America. - WSJApparently you didn't look at the Constitution very carefully, you didn't get past the Preamble. "Promote the general welfare." Promote the general welfare....e.g., the wellbeing of Americans.
Obesity in the United States is in part an economic issue, according to a review paper on the relationship between poverty and obesity published in the January 2004 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The article suggests that the very low cost of energy-dense foods may be linked to rising obesity rates.Healthcare is NOT an "entitlement" as you claim...it is an investment...an investment in Americans...an investment in our communities....an investment in our Country. The only entitlements that folks seem to be forgetting are the entitlements claimed by the CEO's of Healthcare Insurance Companies. They feel they are entitled to deny healthcare to those who are ill so they can get their entitled $102,000 an hour. Yeah...that's right...$102,000 an hour.
“It’s a question of money,” Drewnowski said. “The reason healthier diets are beyond the reach of many people is that such diets cost more. On a per calorie basis, diets composed of whole grains, fish, and fresh vegetables and fruit are far more expensive than refined grains, added sugars and added fats. It’s not a question of being sensible or silly when it comes to food choices, it’s about being limited to those foods that you can afford.” - ScienceDaily
