Congrats Tablas Creek!

for having your Vermentino on the San Francisco Chronicle's Top 100 Wines of 2013

2011 Tablas Creek Paso Robles Vermentino ($27, 13.1%): The Haas family's work with Paso limestone offers a different take on this grape, one perhaps more aligned with its life in southern France. The cool vintage brought a particularly taut version, full of fresh lime, fennel seed and mineral zestiness.

Alma Rosa Winery to be sold?

Oh, no Richard...say it ain't so!
Vintner Richard Sanford may have found the ingredient that will keep the wine flowing at his Alma Rosa Winery & Vineyards: EnCap Investments LP’s Robert Zorich.
Mr. Zorich has offered to purchase the Santa Ynez Valley, Calif., property for $1.7 million in a deal that would allow Mr. Sanford and his wife, Thekla, to continue living and producing wine there as employees. The sale would be tested during an auction next month.
Neither Mr. Sanford nor Mr. Zorich responded to request for comment.
Mr. Sanford, a hall-of-fame winemaker, is credited with bringing the pinot noir grape to California’s Central Coast. But his winery has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy since July 2012. - WSJ

Whole Foods Santa Barbara - the newest BAR in town

Yep. That's right. Looks like our local Whole Foods is creating a bar for beer and wine on-tap like some of their other stores, such as Austin (pictured below.) It will be located right in front of the meat department, so when you are waiting for them to grind up your beef, you might be able to savour a glass o' brewski.

More on Presqu’ile Wines

and I, personally, am excited to try out their wines!
With bocce ball court views extending from Point San Luis to the dunes of Guadalupe to the historic Bien Nacido Vineyard across the river, the new winery — which required two years of steady construction to build and must have cost many millions, though the family won’t say — is making it much easier to get a taste of the Santa Maria Valley. And with sleek modernist architecture, the latest 21st-century winemaking technology, and a commitment to sustainable practices in both the winery and surrounding vineyards, Presqu’ile is bringing a polished style to the boot- and blue-jeans-wearing region, all while staying focused on making some of the tastiest wines around. - SBIndy

Presqu'le Winery will be pouring at the Santa Barbara Wine Festival™

I have not had the pleasure to try this winey's wares out. I am excited to sample them this Saturday.
Presqu'ile winery is a venture with deep roots. For over a century, four generations of our family have partnered in farming, forestry, oil and gas and conservation. Today, two generations of Murphys form the heart of Presqu'ile: Matt, Amanda, Jonathan, Lindsey, Anna, Madison and Suzanne, together with winemaker Dieter Cronje and vineyard manager, Jim Stollberg.
To Presqu'ile Winery, we bring our heritage, pursuit of excellence, affinity for the land and the motto: If we aren't having fun, why bother? - Presqu'le Winery website

2014 Wine Bloggers Conference

WBC14SB

is coming to Santa Barbara County!
We are extremely excited to announce the 2014 Wine Bloggers Conference will be in Santa Barbara, California on July 11-13th. The conference has not been back to California since its first two years, in 2008 and 2009, and we know California and the Santa Barbara area will give us a good reception.

The conference will take place at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott in Buellton, in the heart of Santa Barbara’s wine country. The population of the town is about 5,000, which means everyone will know we are there. The city is located right in the heart of wine country, which (if you have not been) is beautiful, with large open expanses and rolling hills. - Wine Bloggers Conference
And, yes...you can register now!

Top Cheftestant Casey Thompson to highlight "In The Vineyard"

On October 20, 2012,  Hope Family Wines will partner with Firestone Walker Brewing Company to host "In the Vineyard," a unique experience that will showcase some of Paso Robles' best known wine and beer, paired to Top Chef Season 3 finalist Casey Thompson's cuisine.

The event will take place from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Hope Family Vineyard at 1585 Live Oak Rd in Paso Robles, Calif., and will be a highlight celebration of the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance's annual Harvest Wine Weekend.

Casey Thompson is best known for her success in "Top Chef" and previously worked as sous chef under Chef Dean Fearing, "Father of Southwestern Cuisine." In recent years she has scoured small family farms in Napa and Sonoma for locavore farm to table events at wineries. Thompson will prepare a series of dishes specifically for the "In the Vineyard" event, with each plate paired to one wine and one beer. On hand to discuss the pairings will be Hope Family Wines' Winemaker, JC Diefenderfer, as well as Firestone Walker Brewery Brewmaster Matt Brynildson.

Tickets are available for $75, and may be purchased online at inthevineyard.eventbrite.com

A portion of the total proceeds will be donated to Loaves & Fishes Paso Robles (loavesandfishespaso.org), benefitting emergency needs of persons
seeking help in Northern San Luis Obispo County.

Château n'est pas américain

Or so the French are saying.
The European Commission, the 27-nation European Union’s executive body in Brussels, is considering a U.S. request to drop a ban on import into Europe of American wines bearing the label “chateau” or “clos,” a similar term used mainly on wines from Burgundy in eastern France. An E.U. wine committee is tentatively scheduled to vote on the request Sept. 25, whereupon it will go to the commission for a final decision that, given the tides of globalization in Europe, could well be positive.
“They’re trying to steal our reputation,” Haverlan said during a tour of his sun-splashed property. “The real chateaux, they’re certainly not in the United States.” - WaPo

apparently they have not seen Williard Mitt Romney's homes.

After nine successful years of producing the prestigious Taste of the Central Coast fine food and wine festival in San Luis Obispo, the Family Care Networka non-profit organization that provides supportive services for foster and high-need children and families on the Central Coast, is thrilled to bring their signature fundraising event to beautiful Santa Barbara. “We’ve had so much fun hosting the Taste of the Central Coast in San Luis Obispo for the past 9 years, and are delighted to bring this wonderful event to Santa Barbara. The Santa Barbara community is known for its compassion and generosity, and we hope they will join us to raise a glass and toast to a great cause,” said Roberts.

Relax and enjoy great live music in Bacara’s luxurious oceanfront backdrop, and don’t forget to peruse and bid on the incredible collection of silent and live auction items! “Mr. Santa Barbara” himself, Larry Crandell, will emcee the event and put his humor and wit to good use as auctioneer of the live auction. Larry has raised millions of dollars over the past 40+ years, and the Family Care Network is honored to have such a shining star in the community involved in their premiere event.

California Wine industry focus of PBS special

Central Coast Wines mentioned in New York Times

Bargins from American Vines that are a pleasure to drink -

Palmina Santa Barbara County Pinot Grigio 2011, $17
Palmina is devoted to making wines from Italian grapes grown in Santa Barbara County. This pinot grigio is fuller-bodied than what might come from northeast Italy, but it’s lively, vivacious, balanced and properly refreshing.
Qupé Santa Barbara County Marsanne 2011, $20
Bob Lindquist is one of the unsung heroes of California wine, and his Qupé label is consistently overlooked, possibly because he makes wines of little-known Rhône grapes like marsanne. This is actually a blend of two Rhône grapes, 79 percent marsanne and 21 percent roussanne. Pleasantly weighty and harmonious with persistent floral, nutlike flavors.
Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara County Chardonnay 2010, $20
While much of California has veered from making bombastic chardonnays to lean “no oak” versions, Jim Clendenen has stayed the course, making wines that are direct, restrained and balanced. The 2010 chardonnay is lively and inviting, smoky and spicy.
