First Annual Food from the Bar Food & Funds Drive

July 1 - July 31, 2011.

Santa Barbara Women Lawyers has challenged their colleagues and the community to raise money for the Santa Barbara Food Bank that does such wonderful things to feed our fellow Santa Barbarians.

A perfect storm of conditions has coalesced to make this one of the most challenging times for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County in recent memory. The nation's social safety net, of which food banks are an integral part, is being strained as rarely before, thanks to a menacing combination of rising food and fuel prices and an economy which seems headed for recession. These economic pressures have put more and more people at risk of hunger; while the Foodbank wrestles with higher costs and decreased federal aid.

New at Nordstrom

(read..."Espresso Bar") coming soon.

When Nordstrom first opened up in Santa Barbara, they had an espresso bar on Canon Perdido street (the remnants of that attempt are the iron bars on the side of the building.) They also had a little coffee cart located at the other entrance in Paseo Nuevo mall itself. But that was long ago.
This new eBar looks like it will be situated in the space just to the left of the entrance on Canon Perdido.

Hey, Santa Barbara....BAN THE BAG!

After months of back-and-forth discussions, Santa Barbara City Council is set to again take up the issue of single-use plastic bags. It's time to let our voices be heard!

As you know, local governments throughout California, other states and even other countries have placed bans and/or taxes on single-use plastic bags due to their environmental impact. Will Santa Barbara finally join the game? This is UP TO US!!!

Options for City Council include a) Mandating that local stores implement a 'Where's Your Bag' campaign, b) Placing a voter approved tax on bags, and c) an outright ban. 

Join the Community Environmental Council, SB ChannelKeeper, Surfrider, Save the Mermaids and others to make sure that ONE of these options is selected!

Though we can't be certain of the exact time this issue will be heard, the item is scheduled as #18 which should be around 3pm. You can follow the hearing online at http://www.santabarbaraca.​gov/CAP/ to gauge the exact timing.

Chocolate Opulence opening in August 2011 (update from July 2)

According to their website, Chocolate Opulence is opening up a storefront in Paseo Nuevo in August 2011. They already have a store down in the Marketplace at Santa Monica Place in Santa Monica.
Chocolate Opulence is the dream-concept of owner and chocolate connoisseur Terry Perretz. His goal is to make fine, French artisan chocolates available to everyone.  His motto is, “Fine chocolate is an indulgence that everyone should be able to experience!”

La Cumbre Plaza "rethinks" their "ritzy" image

how about having shops that actual working people can afford to shop at? It wasn't the economy that is doing the mall's the snotty attitude.
After flirting with a new image as a ritzy shopping center, Santa Barbara’s La Cumbre Plaza is returning to humbler roots. The mall on La Cumbre Road and upper State Street is welcoming retailers from across the price spectrum, owner Macerich told me, as it tries to attract new tenants to the space vacated by Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse at the end of June.

Ruth’s Chris — the largest luxury steakhouse chain in the U.S. — was one of several upscale tenants brought in over the last several years as La Cumbre worked to reposition itself as a high-end shopping spot. Other newcomers included designer brand Louis Vuitton and jewelry retailer Tiffany’s & Co. — both of which are still at the center. But as the economy sputtered to a halt and consumers pulled back on spending, Ruth’s Chris apparently suffered. After three years in business, it shuttered its doors at the end of June.

Meanwhile, La Cumbre operator Macerich is conceding that with consumers still cautious, it may be time to reconsider its earlier makeover attempts. Anchored by Sears and Vons, La Cumbre “has opened up with the change in the economy,” mall spokeswoman Mary-Lynn Harms told me, and is no longer limiting its consideration of new tenants to upscale retail. - Pacific Coast Business Times

So...Which Santa Barbara restaurant is this?

High-end Santa Barbara restaurant with great reputation is relocating.

Detailed Description:
This beautiful, upscale, recently remodeled space houses a critically-acclaimed restaurant in the heart of Santa Barbara’s downtown dining district. The owner and chef are relocating to another county, leaving behind over $400K worth of new equipment, furniture, and fixtures. In 2005 the property was stripped and rebuilt (including electrical wiring and plumbing) with eco-friendly measures and materials, making it energy-efficient and water-efficient. The 1400 square-foot space seats 40 inside with room for ten more seats on the 100 square-foot  back patio. The modern decor of grey banquettes, brown leather chairs, and blond wood flooring lends itself to any type of cuisine, but the current owner serves high-end New American fare and the recipes utilizing organic produce from area farmers will be sold along with the property for $399K. There are 1.5 years remaining on the lease with a 3-year option for renewal (rare in this busy section of Santa Barbara that boasts 4 other restaurants and a fancy hotel on the same street). A type 41 beer and wine license is included in the sale price (although the long, dark wood, marble-topped L-shaped bar is piped to dispense all types of liquor). Prospective buyers will be given a list of all the new kitchen equipment. The current owner brings in an average of $41K of sales per month with 3 full-time employees and 4 part-timers (they are only open for dinner 6 nights per week). Beer and wine make up 26% of gross sales. The rent is $3150/month including CAM. A parking garage nearby allows plenty of visitors to stroll the charming neighborhood and be drawn in by the arched windows of this 2-year-old restaurant in beautiful condition. Submit the online confidentiality agreement in order to receive this restaurant's name and address. Completing the confidentiality form also entitles you to view additional photos and receive advance notice of new listings in your area so you can digest all the hottest bites first.

·        Located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara within a stone’s throw of four (soon to be five) other upscale restaurants, cute cafes, and even a fancy hotel
·        A parking garage nearby allows tourists and locals easy access
·        Lease ($3,150/mo. including CAM) has an attached 3-year renewal option which is unusually long for this part of town
·        Type 41 liquor license allows sale of beer and wine (currently alcohol sales make up 26% of gross sales)
·        Restaurant is lauded by critics for its organic New American cuisine and has a loyal following stretching from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles
·        Current owner and chef are moving to a different county, but will include recipes in the sale
·        1400 sq. ft. seats 40 inside; another 100 sq. ft. seats 10 out back
·        All kitchen equipment, furniture, and decorations (except for one painting) will stay with property
·        Restaurant space completely rebuilt to be eco-friendly just 2 years ago
·        Sale price of $399K is very reasonable considering owner spent over $400K to outfit the space and has taken very good care of it—no improvements or repairs needed
·        Current monthly income (averaging $41K/mo. this year) is based on dinner service only
