La Super-Rica written up in Forbes Magazine

Guess the tourista lines will be even longer in front of the place now.

There were food writers aplenty in those years stopping in to see Julia, or engaging her on the phone in pursuit of the living taste of our greatest food legend. And Julia, who was always intensely loyal to the things and people she loved, started telling everyone that her favorite place to eat in Santa Barbara was La Super Rica Taqueria, which had opened on Milpas Street, SB’s great Mexican food neighborhood, in 1996. She mentioned it in an interview withBon Appetit, discussed it on Good Morning America, and even inspired an article in The New Yorker about La Super Rica Taqueria.
American foodies ate it up, savoring the wack factor: the tall, patrician, cultured, New-England-ish lady who introduced all of us to coq au vin, escargots, and French mother sauces was touting a down-and-dirty taco joint as her fave dining spot! The irony was irresistibly delicious. - Forbes

Julie, Julia and Jamie

No...not a sequel to the blog, book and/or movie. It's the upcoming foodie weekend at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa featuring Chef Jamie West (formerly of Santa Barbara's San Ysidro Ranch), blogger/author Julie Powell and the late Julia Child's recipes
Ojai Valley Inn & Spa is bringing the hit movie Julie & Julia to real life as author Julie Powell and the Inn's Executive Chef Jamie West team up for a unique cooking weekend January 23-24, 2010.

The special weekend includes author Julie Powell and Chef West in an interactive cooking demonstration highlighting some of Julia Child's recipes, similar to those portrayed in the Hollywood film Julie & Julia from Sony Pictures. This will be followed by a sumptuous dinner dedicated to Julia Child's recipes.

Chef West is well prepared for this authentic weekend. Julia Child frequently dined in Chef West's previous restaurants. She was a guest on Chef West's weekly cooking show on ABC-TV in Santa Barbara. Chef West often ate lunch at her apartment that, as expected, even had her famous shadow board for utensils on the wall.

As Chef West remarked, "A few years before her death, I drove her to a Masters of Food and Wine Event in Carmel. She talked and I did all the work! On the way to Carmel, we stopped and ate at the In-N-Out Burger in Santa Maria. A young woman at the counter quietly inquired if this really was Julia Child. It was great to see how people of all ages knew and respected her."

In addition to the cooking demonstration and dinner, guests will have an opportunity to talk at length with Julie Powell and Chef West. They will also receive a personalized copy of the book Julie & Julia. - Ojai Valley Inn & Spa

Kitchen Aid Mixers

Kitchen aid!
Originally uploaded by Johanni.

still proudly made in the USA. NPR has a great story about the factory in Ohio.

The KitchenAid stand mixer is the tool of the trade of cooking, especially baking. At $200 and up, it's an investment in both money and counter space — and it's still being made in the U.S.

The mixers have been made in Greenville, Ohio, since 1941. At the KitchenAid Experience Center, the company's retail store in the town, every model of mixer and blender in every color can be seen.

People come to the store for cooking demonstrations; sometimes they arrive as if on a pilgrimage, walking through the front door in amazement. Downstairs there is a mixer museum, featuring, especially now that there's a movie about her, a cobalt blue K5A model that was owned, used and signed by Julia Child.

"Bon appetit," she inscribed on the bowl.

Listen to the story..HERE.

I absolutely love mine. Once you have a Kitchen Aid...you'll never have those weight lifter forearms from stirring again. It truly is a kitchen aide.

Meryl Streep plays Julia Child

in the upcoming film adaptation of the blog gone big time "Julie and Julia."
Streep juggles pots, pans and pâté in what promises to be a deliciously rich portrait of Julia Child during the decade-long span when she evolved into America's queen of French cuisine in Julie & Julia. Joining her is Amy Adams, her nun sidekick from Doubt, as blogger Julie Powell, who spent a year toiling over all 524 recipes in Child's classic Mastering the Art of French Cooking. - USA Today
Directed by Nora Ephron and scheduled to hit the theatres on August 7th...seems the appropriate month to release as Julia was born August 15, 1912 and passed on August 13, 2004 at her home in Montecito. Perhaps they will have a special event in Julia's honor at her favorite local restaurant, La Super-Rica.

Julia Child...Chef, local personality, cookbook author....

Spy.

Famed chef Julia Child shared a secret with Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg and Chicago White Sox catcher Moe Berg at a time when the Nazis threatened the world.

They served in an international spy ring managed by the Office of Strategic Services, an early version of the CIA created in World War II by President Franklin Roosevelt.

The secret comes out Thursday, all of the names and previously classified files identifying nearly 24,000 spies who formed the first centralized intelligence effort by the United States. The National Archives, which this week released a list of the names found in the records, will make available for the first time all 750,000 pages identifying the vast spy network of military and civilian operatives. -

But we've known for quite some time that Julia was cooking up some intriguing recipes of intrigue.......

Decades before becoming a famous chef, she worked for the Office of Strategic Services. (The OSS was the predecessor to the CIA.) She was assigned to solve a problem for U.S. naval forces during World War II: Sharks would bump into explosives that were placed underwater, setting them off and warning the German U-boats they were intended to sink. "So... Julia Child and a few of her male compatriots got together and literally cooked up a shark repellent," that was used to coat the explosives, McCarthy says. - NPR (2002)

And, tomorrow would have been Julia's 96th Birthday. Jessica's Biscuit (aka ecookbooks.com) is celebrating...

It would be impossible to present all of Julia Child's contributions to cooking in America in this small space. She transformed our appreciation for French cooking, pioneered cooking on television, and made all of us better cooks and/or better eaters. To celebrate some of the best of Julia, the hardcover edition of the memoir she wrote with her grandnephew, My Life in France, is $7.99 through August 31st. Thank you, Julia!
