Peet's Coffee & Tea being privatized

by the same German corporate owner of OPI nail polish.
Peet's Coffee & Tea is being taken private for approximately $977.6 million.
German conglomerate Joh. A. Benckiser will pay $73.50 per share, which is a 29 percent premium to Peet's Friday closing stock price of $57.16. The companies put the deal's total value at about $1 billion Monday.
...Privately held Benckiser invests in brands in the consumer goods category. It is the majority owner of Coty Inc., which is known for its celebrity fragrances and OPI nail polish. Coty announced last month that it is planning to go public and hopes to raise $700 million in an initial public offering. It also owns Labelux, a luxury goods company with brands such as Jimmy Choo, Bally and Belstaff. - SFGate

we used to be concerned about state secrets being kept secret

now it's "corporate" food secrets that are of major concern these days. Come on...really...there's a "secret" to "nooks and crannies?"
A former food-industry executive armed with the secret to the "nooks and crannies" in Thomas' English muffins displayed "suspicious conduct" before his planned move to rival Hostess, a U.S. appeals court said in upholding a ban on the move.

Chris Botticella of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., remains barred from starting the Hostess job while a trade-secret lawsuit filed by Thomas' parent company, Bimbo Bakeries USA, plays out. - USA Today

Way to go, Bob!

In this time of greedy corporations, it's so nice to hear of a company actually caring for it's employee's!

Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods is a widely-known provider of organic grains, flour, and baking mixes. It operates in two locations in the Portland, Oregon, suburb of Milwaukie (yes, that’s how they spell it), distributing its products throughout North America and to Asia and the Middle East. It is privately owned, has 209 employees, revenues estimated to be between $20 million and $30 million per year, with year-over-year revenue growth of 20 to 30 percent over the past five years.

It made international news in 2009 when its steel cut oats product (one of my favorites) won the Golden Spurtle Award at the 16th Annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship in Scotland.

In a move reminiscent of Aaron Feuerstein of Malden Mills, it was announced on Tuesday that the founder, Bob Moore, is transitioning the company to an employee-owned firm through an employee stock ownership program (ESOP). - Ernest T Bass diary over at the Daily Kos

Note to Cablevision...Stop the Cable Food Fight

You really don't want to piss off Foodies. Forget "MTV"...they want their FoodTV...and quick. Cablevision execs might not want to mention their occupations whilst dining out, either. Their Ceasar Salads just might come with a "knife in the back." Resentment and revenge are "dishes best served cold." So...when you least expect it...they will get back at you.

She was home watching a marathon on "House Hunters" on New Year's Eve when HGTV and the Food Network were suddenly taken away from her and roughly 3 million other subscribers in the region.

Since then, the two companies - Cablevision and HGTV/Food Network owner Scripps Networks - have been carrying on a campaign of finger-pointing advertisements and corporate statements blaming the other for the loss.

The very popular "Food Network" has been yanked from Cablevision systems in a dispute over money. Food Network routinely searches for "diners, drive-ins and dives," but many Cablevision subscribers have been left searching for the channel itself, reports CBS station WCBS-TV.

"I'm kind of upset that they snatched it out like that without warning anybody," Cablevision subscriber Diana Rogers said. - philly57

Kelloggs is saving the Circus Animal Parade

How did I let this tasty little piece of info slip by? Kelloggs apparently has stepped in and purchased the recipes and the rights to Mother's Circus Animals!
On Thursday, Kellogg Co. closed on a $12.1 million deal to acquire the recipes and trademark of Mother's Cake & Cookie Co., former sister company of Archway Cookies.

Mother's Cake & Cookie Co., which manufactures iced animal crackers, sandwich cookies and wire cut cookies, has a devoted customer base in California and the western United States.

...Also bidding on the bankrupt cookie companies Wednesday was Charlotte, N.C.-based snack manufacturer Lance, Inc., which won a bid to buy almost all of Archway's assets for about $30 million.

Lance also placed an undisclosed bid to acquire Mother's Cake and Cookie Co., but lost to Kellogg. - Battle Creek Enquirer 
I suppose it makes a little sense for the the little frosted animal cookies going to the home of the sugar frosted flakey tiger.
