El Encanto dedicated to sourcing locally

including having their own cow.

As part of its dedication to locally sourced produce, El Encanto will have its own cow: Ellie. Ellie’s milk will be used to make a special cheese only found at the hotel. How great is that? And it doesn’t stop there.

There is an El Encanto unpasteurised beer, brewed nearby, to go with Ellie’s cheese. Your morning coffee is El Encanto’s own brand, and an on-site herb and vegetable garden means the journey from field to kitchen for some ingredients is as short as it can get.
Various energy saving and preservation techniques have been implemented to reduce overall consumption. Guests can ditch their car and take one of the complimentary electric bikes to head into Santa Barbara. Set on a hilltop, getting to the beach from the resort will be a breeze, but going back after a lazy day that little bit of electric power will sure help. - Hotel Chatter

Got Milk Crisis?

Yes...we do. Our nation's dairy industry is being milked dry by unfair practices.

Is it fair that large dairy companies are undercutting U.S. producers by importing cheap milk protein concentrates from other countries and using them instead of U.S.-produced milk? (And is it fair that the FDA does nothing to stop the practice, even though MPCs aren’t approved as a food ingredient?) Is it fair that the dairy industry is so consolidated that a few large companies can manipulate the price of milk to their own benefit, pocketing profits while dairy farmers are left holding the bag? Is it fair that farmers have shelled out more and more for feed and hay in the last few years, but the prices they receive for milk have fallen? Is it fair that consumers are still paying for milk what they were earlier this year, while farmers’ prices dropped 30% in January alone?

H**l no!

And can we do something about it? Yes we can.

Got Moo-lah?

You might have to pay a load for that 1/2 caf double splash of non-fat extra dry latte.
Effective Sunday, the California department of food and agriculture has set the price California dairy operators will be paid at a record $1.98 per gallon of milk, up from $1.06 a year ago. The minimum retail price for a gallon of low-fat milk, said the Department, will be $3.10, compared to $2.10 in January.

The State posts the "lowest reported lawful retail price'' for milk due to a law that says milk cannot be sold below cost.

The price spike -- the result of a drought in Australia, tightening supplies from Europe, higher demand in asia and the diversion of feed corn to ethanol plants -- also threatens to jack up the cost of cheese, lattes, chocolate bars and pizzas. - SFGate
