Seattlest has a terrific New Year's Resolution

I really like this....it's very do-able here in local restauranty Santa Barbara.
Here's a resolution Seattlest hopes we can all get behind: let's go out more in 2009. More dinners at family-run restaurants, more happy hour cocktails at locally owned bars, more weekend getaways to nearby B&Bs.

It makes sense to spend money closer to home, and what's closer than our neighborhood diner, our local café? If we want to see them survive the downturn, if we appreciate their contribution to the city where we live, our patronage is vital to keeping them alive.

Remember Michael Pollan's injunction: if you enjoy your view, if you want to keep your view (of farms and fields), then eat your view. If you don't want to see that farmland turned into housing tracts, you have to buy and eat the food produced by local farmers. Same thing with local businesses.

...It's worth remembering that the restaurant industry in this country is roughly the same size as the automobile industry. On the other hand, with tens of thousands of individual business owners, it doesn't have nearly the political clout as Detroit's Big Three. Except for McDonald's and Starbucks, there are few national players. But millions of people work in restaurants as waiters, cooks, and dishwashers. Millions more depend on restaurants to buy their products and services. You may not see ads for an all-new, 500-horsepower Pasta Perfecta or its rivals, the sleek and stylish Sirloin Supra or the powerful Porkbelly Primo. Restaurants aren't asking for a multi-billion-dollar bailout; they just want us to come in for a test-drive. - Seattlest

This is a great resolution! Happy New Year!

You people are pathetic. It's always commercial with you. Do nothing but consume and consume more. How about walking to your local grocer and buying local food at a reasonable price and cooking dinners with your families and everybody sitting down and sharing meals and time together.
For a new and novel new year resolution, promise yourself you won't go to another place to eat an overpriced meal you can't afford and instead you'll try doing something worthwhile that benefits us all, including yourself.

Anonymous, uh, hate to break to you but the people in the restaurant industry have families to support. There is nothing wrong with consuming, it drives the economy. How about giving parents/caretakers a break and going out to dinner so they can enjoy a meal and relax. You are pathetic for not realizing that consumption drives the economy allowing people to keep jobs and buy things and round it goes. Fine walk to local grocer, make dinners at home, but don't get all high and mighty about how pathetic and commercial people are for going out to dinner to take a break from their lives.

Too funny... Does the SportsDiva need a break from the kids so she can relax? Maybe a little more exercise will help. Yes, I take exception to someone suggesting I go out and spend needlessly when we should be doing more for ourselves and we'd be better off for it. I have a perfectly nice house.. I don't have to stay at a local B&B to spur a non-essential economy. I don't need to drive my Escalade to the local diner to prove I care about the economy. Sell me something useful and I'll pay for it and don't buy anything from me unless it contributes.

Mr. high & mighty

Anonymous, or should I call you Mr. High and Mighty since the rest of us have the nerve to put up "identies." No, I don't need a break from the kids since I don't have any or more exercise since I'm a kickboxer.

And no one is suggesting you go out and spend needlessly. Geesh. Read the article. It says go out locally if you want to. Support your local economy. God, chill out and stay home. I'm glad you aren't going out. It would ruin it for the rest of us trying to have a fun time.
