Iranian pistachios have been banned

which is boosting California pistachio sales. Did you know that 98% of U.S. pistachios come from the Golden State?
California pistachio growers are finding themselves the unexpected beneficiaries of U.S. trade sanctions against Iran. A U.S. ban on Iranian pistachios went into effect on Wednesday, as the Obama administration ratchets up economic pressure on Iran to open its nuclear facilities to international inspection. President Obama signed the ban on July 1. It's good news for American pistachio farmers, who have long vied with Iran for dominance in the U.S.'s $700-million domestic market, as well as overseas. And it's particularly welcome for Golden State farmers, who are in the midst of harvest season. - LatteTimes
I, myself, am partial to our local growers Santa Barbara Pistachios. I pick them up at our Farmer's Market pretty much every Saturday. (Yes...I gobble them up that fast..) My favorite? The Chile Lemon!

Bo Obama Beanie Baby

That's right...Ty's having a dog gone good time raking in the bucks off Obama mania. Make no bones about that. Bo is top dog in the country...and in the toy world these days.

Bo, a Beanie Baby version of Barack Obama’s new presidential pooch, has been disappearing from shelves within hours of his arrival in stores. He has also become eBay’s latest pet project, with purchasers seeking double the doll’s $4.99 retail price online minutes after they buy it through retail outlets. Some are even asking more than $100.

The Bo Beanies, of course, are modeled after the Obamas’ new Portuguese water dog, a gift from Senator Edward Kennedy earlier this year. And while the similarities are obvious — the doll is advertised as “The First Dog” — there is no presidential seal of approval for the product.

Nonetheless, Ty Inc. introduced the stuffed animal on April 16, two days after Bo made his White House debut in a photo session with the president, first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters, 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha. Ty said the company will donate a portion of its profits from the "Bo" doll to local animal shelters. -

Let's hope that Ty donates a portion of the sale of Bo to our local animal shelters who were overwhelmed with need during the fire.

What took them so long

to do this?

The Government on Saturday permanently banned the slaughter of cows too sick or weak to stand on their own, seeking to further minimize the chance that mad cow disease could enter the food supply.

..Obama called the country's food inspection system "a hazard to public health," citing outbreaks of deadly food poisoning in peanuts this year, peppers and possibly tomatoes last year and spinach in 2006.-

The First Cookie

of the First Family...and apparently the rest of the country. Sales of the "Obama" cookie are booming at Baby Boomer Cafe.
Want an example of the change Barack Obama is bringing to the country?

Check out cookie sales at Baby Boomers Cafe in Des Moines.

Ever since word got out of the President-elect and his family's fondness for Baby Boomers' chocolate chunk cookies, the small downtown restaurant can't get them out of the oven fast enough.

...Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, said the Obamas and the campaign staff loved the cookies, and they're fond of Maxfield, too.

"He knew most of us by name, and he cared about how everyone was doing," Vietor said.

Michele Obama would hold meetings in the cafe, and Barack Obama even called Maxfield the day after the caucuses to thank him for helping feed the staff and his family.

"It's just insane. I mean they are the coolest people," said Maxfield. - Chicago Tribune
