Chobani Recall

Chobani recall

Chobani has officially issued a recall of some of its Greek yogurt cups, about a week after customers complained of "fizzing" yogurt. The company began voluntarily pulling cups believed to contain an unspecified mold Chobani says is commonly found in dairy products from store shelves earlier this week.
The affected cups are those with the code 16-012 and expiration dates between Sept. 11 and Oct. 7 in the following sizes: 6 ounce, 16 ounce, 32 ounce, 3.5 ounce, Chobani bite 3.5 ounce and Chobani Flip 5.3 ounce. - Los Angeles Times

But it before it was a recall...it wasn't a recall.
Have your Chobani yogurts tasted kind of weird recently? You aren’t alone. Yogurt lovers all over the country have reported oddness that ranges from “that tastes a little off” to “AAAAH WHY IS MY YOGURT CUP BULGING?!” After receiving (and deleting) a lot of complaints on their Facebook page, the company quietly pulled affected batches from stores, but there’s no official recall on. - Consumerist.

Harry's Berries' Salsa, Beans Recalled Due to Botulism Risk

Head's up on a food recall that was available in our local area...

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is warning consumers not to eat Harry’s Berries Salsa (mild or hot flavors) or Harry’s Berries Dilled Beans, packed by Gean Farms, Inc., because they may have been improperly produced, making them susceptible to contamination with Clostridium botulinum. No illnesses have been linked to any of the affected products at this time.
Gean Farms, Inc., of Oxnard, California, is voluntarily recalling the products after CDPH discovered they were produced without the required controls to prevent botulism toxin. Ingestion of botulism toxin from improperly processed foods can lead to serious illness and death. These products were sold under the Gean Farms, Inc. label and packaged in one-pint glass canning jars with screw-on metal lids, labeled as “Harry’s Berries Salsa” and “Harry’s Berries Dilled Beans.”
These products do not contain production or date codes. Additional product information, including photos of affected products, can be found on the CDPH website. The products were sold between May 2011 and November 2012 at certified farmers markets in Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties. - Marler Blog

Nielsen-Massey Vanilla Bean Paste recall was based on ERROR

I am relieved. I LOVE this vanilla. I think it is the finest vanilla out there...and the company has been amazing in customer service. They have special blended the vanilla I use in cookies. From a press release received today:

A voluntary recall of Nielsen-Massey Vanillas’ Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste has been found to be based on a false-positive Listeria reading reported by the company’s outside testing laboratory.  Subsequent investigations and further tests by the FDA, the outside lab in question and another independent lab brought in to re-verify the results, all came back negative.   There were no positive results in any raw material used or for any of the equipment used in the process. Additionally, the other independent lab and the FDA laboratory, using the exact same gallon bottle of Paste which tested positive initially, found no trace of Listeria whatsoever.  As the FDA did not have any findings as a result of their investigation, no Form 483 was issued.

On May 16, 2011, Nielsen-Massey’s outside testing laboratory advised Nielsen-Massey that it had detected potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination in lot no. 11123 of its Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste product as part of its regular quality control testing.   Nielsen-Massey acted immediately, notifying the FDA and writing and dispatching a recall letter to its customers within 24 hours of the lab’s notification.  There have been no reports of illness related to Nielsen-Massey’s
This recall did not affect Nielsen-Massey’s other products.

“We acted immediately when consumer safety became an issue,” said Craig Nielsen, chief executive officer.  “And we would do the same thing again, since an error on the side of safety is almost always the right thing to do.  But it’s extremely unfortunate that a laboratory error caused such inconvenience to our customers and consumers.  We’ve notified all our customers and have apologized to them as well.
“For 104 years we have provided the world’s finest vanilla products made with the utmost care and safeguards.  Nielsen-Massey remains committed to providing the world’s finest vanilla for the best customers in the world.”

Customers with questions may contact Nielsen-Massey at 800.525.PURE (7873) or 847.578.1550, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM Central Daylight Time.

Nielsen-Massey Vanilla Bean Paste

I use this brand of vanilla. It simply is the best on the market, in my opinion, however, the bean paste is being recalled.
Officials of an Illinois company say it is recalling Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste because of potential Listeria monocytogenes.

Nielsen-Massey Vanillas Inc. of Waukegan is voluntarily recalling lot No. 11123 of its Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste because it has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria.

The recall extends to all states of the United States and Canada at all levels of distribution, including the retail level. The recalled product is offered in translucent plastic 1-gallon- and 1-quart-size containers under the name Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste, through a variety of distribution channels including direct delivery to business customers, distributors and retail sales.

There have been no reports of illness related to this product. - Marler Blog

Blogroll Amnesty Day

Also known as the Jon Swift/Al Weisel Memorial Blogroll Amenesty Day is, well, more than just a day. It's a celebration of a life gone...of sharing voices that may not be heard...it's about driving traffic off the blogging superhighway and onto some really lovely side paths of knowledge.

Skippy gives the low down on what exactly this special "blogtopia" (y!sctp) event is really all about.
readers of this space know that b.a.d. is the holiday wherein we ask everyone in blogtopia (and yes, we coined that phrase) to link to 5 smaller blogs w/less traffic than theirs (no bad jokes about no blogs having less traffic than yours, please).

this way we all can introduce our readers to new voices in blogtopia (and yes, we coined that phrase)' as well as giving greater exposure to blogs which may otherwise go unnoticed.

of course, the impetus for this whole ordeal originated w/our dearly departed friend, the legendary jon swift, aka al weisel, who was quite upset by the original blogroll bloodbath and self-amnesty declaration by those big box blogs who shall not be named.

al, in his guise as conservative blogger jon swift, wondered why so-called liberal blogs would have the least liberal blogrolling policies. we here at skippy international joined al/jon in his mock self-righteousness, and thus, four years ago b.a.d. was born!
Some informational blogs I would like to share this year for Blogroll Amnesty...are, well, foodist (of course.)

although his blog is definitely LARGER than mine, Bill Marler's blog (The Marler Blog) is the place to go for food recall news and is definitely worth checking in everyday.

and a newbie to blogtopia, but he's EVERYWHERE else....Fabio Viviani's very funny "you can hear his accent through the blog", blog.
