serving the La Crescenta / La Canada-Flintridge area.

The area is ablaze and the temple is located in the foothills just west of the major portion of the Station Fire burning uncontrolled in the San Gabriel mountains.

Say some prayers for the residents of the 210 corridor...it's not looking good.

The Canary Hotel here in town is named after the Canary Islands

Seems that Santa Barbara has another Canary Island coincidence....one of the Islands, La Palma, is battling an out of control wildfire...the type of fire we know all too well here.
A wildfire is raging out of control on the Canary Island of La Palma a day after it forced 4,000 people to flee their homes and stranded dozens of tourists.

...Fanned by strong winds the fire had by Sunday morning devastated some 5,000 acres of pine forest and destroyed dozens of homes in the town of Fuencaliente on the south of the volcanic island.

The fires threatened to engulf the village of Tigalate and the resort of Mazo and there were fears the flames could spread to an observatory housing the world's largest telescope. - The Telegraph UK

Great Ash Cleanup Tips

from someone who has done it a number of times.
Wood ash is alkaline. The easiest way to make lye is putting wood ash in water. It has a pH of about 11, just a little lower than household ammonia so it is important to clean it up.

To quote Alannis....

"Isn't it Ironic"

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared May 3 through 9 Wildfire Awareness Week, to remind Californians to be vigilant as the state approaches peak fire season and to highlight the importance of the homeowner's role in preparing their property ahead of time to survive a wildfire.

CAL FIRE will be conducting fire safety inspections throughout the state over the coming weeks to educate homeowners of the importance of wildfire safety and to ensure that homes have 100 feet of defensible space. - Ledger Dispatch

These guys are GODS

I tell ya...
The job of roughly 900 firefighters was hampered by poor access to the fire area, officials said, as well as winds of up to 50 mph and thick brush that hadn’t burned in a half-century.

"We are in a state of extreme emergency,'' said David Sadecki, a spokesman for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. "We're running very, very thin.'' - Latte Times

The Big Sur Fire has JUMPED THE FIRE LINE

The evacuation area has increased by 10 miles from Tuesday and now encompasses nearly the entire Big Sur community. - SFGATE

There's a "techie" who is helping to fight the Big Sur fires and he checks in on a blog on Wired.com

I'm on the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade and we've been working hard with the huge force here to keep our friends' and neighbors' houses from burning down. The air support alone has been spectacular and effective -- in the last 48 hours an Air Guard C-130 with a retardant pod, two four-engined bombers (turboprop P-3 Orion airframes), a couple of two-engined bombers and a couple of twin-engined spotter craft. Add to that [helicopters like] a civilian Chinook, a big-ass old Sikorsky and a bunch of Hueys hauling 1,000 gal buckets from the ocean or from ponds up to the fire lines. Fire Camp alone is three times bigger than any movie location I've ever seen (though not as huge as the moderate-sized military exercise they were ginning up for at Ft. Hunter-Liggett, just as we finished up fire school in early June).

*UPDATE* All residents in Big Sur told to evacuate.

My Beloved Big Sur

might just become a shadow of our tears instead of smiles....if the flames continue to move forward.

(Opening scene of the 1965 film, The Sandpiper, starring Liz & Dick....showcasing the amazing beauty of "the Sur.")

California officials closed a stretch of the state's scenic coastal highway around historic Big Sur on thursday as a wildfire threatened 500 homes in the remote area known for its contemplative retreats.

Firefighters have been battling hundreds of blazes across California sparked by lightning strikes over the past weekend, including two that merged into the single fire around Big Sur, an artists' haven that was once home to writer Henry Miller.

The Big Sur fire has burned more than 23,500 acres (9,510 hectares) and destroyed 16 homes and two other buildings.

Big Sur, on California's central coast, is heavily wooded, with steep slopes running down to the Pacific Ocean. The terrain creates one of California's most dramatic landscapes -- and slow going for almost 700 firefighters on the scene. -

Say a little prayer for those up in The Sur and hope that legendary spots like
Nepenthe, Esalen, Big Sur Lodge, The Campgrounds, The Post Ranch Inn and Bixby Bridge remain standing...uncharred.

The smoke and ash are easily seen by satellite. Gusts of 112mph winds have been recorded.

It's just too large a disaster to fathom.

The Zaca Wildfire jumped the lines

and is a serious danger to homes and wine country, yet again. A second evacuation notice was given to the Peachtree Community and Happy Canyon up in the Valley.

The fire started on July 4 and has "devoured" 33,500 acres. It's new "containment" date is expected to by September 7!

Meanwhile, ash still falls like rain. Not good in the bronchial passage neighborhood.

Ash has been falling like rain here.

It has been difficult to breath. My little black car looks almost grey with the amount of ash that has collected on it. The sunsets have been a glorious orange/red. But years living here, experiencing decades of fires, I know that sunsets of such beauty could only mean disaster somewhere close by.

And this Zaca Fire that has been raging since July 4, quite possibly could prove disasterous to hundreds of Santa Barbara County residents and a mainstay of our local economy, wine tasting and winery touring. (Remember, Sideways?)
An estimated 200 residents were evacuated monday evening in an area east of Santa Barbara's wine country as the stubborn Zaca wildfire spread and crept closer to homes and ranches.

Officials issued the evacuation order — the first since the fire began on July 4 — about 7:30 p.m. the 25,000-acre blaze burning in the Los Padres National Forest and San Rafael Wilderness moved east and south, coming within about two miles of some residences, said Santa Barbara County Fire Capt. Eli Iskow.

A voluntary evacuation order also was issued for 1,000 residents living in and around Los Olivos, he said. - Latte Times
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department has issued an "Evacuation Order" for the residents of Happy Canyon Road above Baseline Road, including the communities of Tunnel Ranch, Peachtree Canyon, Rancho De Los Vistadores, and the Sedgwick Ranch. The Zaca Fire is at McKinley Ridge and is an immediate threat to life and property. Residents who live in or around the identified communities are advised to immediately evacuate. - InciWeb
