Stonyfield Yogurt Recall

I love Stonyfield and am saddened that this has happened to a really good company.
Stonyfield Farm is recalling about 44,000 quarts of fat-free plain organic yogurt in Stonyfield Farm branded containers because the yogurt products might contain sanitizer that's normally used in food plants. The company said it hasn't received any reports of illnesses, but it has received several reports from people noticing an off-taste or off-smell. Stonyfield Farm said the issue resulted from human error in not following the company's standard operating procedures.

The recalled products are limited to Stonyfield Farm 32-ounce Fat Free Plain yogurt with the UPC code 52159 00006. It carries one of these product codes printed along the cup bottom that start with the following date codes:

-- May 06 09: Time stamped 22:17 through 23:59 (limited to these specific time stamps only).
-- May 07 09: All time stamps.
For more information, consumers can call 800-776-2697. - AP
But, again, why is this recall hitting the wires late Friday night?

Labels: ,

My family ate 1 1/2 containers of this tainted yogurt, unhappy with the taste, but not thinking anything was wrong. My Stop & Shop in Mass. stopped stocking it, but didn't post any notices to warm customers who had already bought the product.

Same here, I thought it tasted funny but ate some anyway, which in hindsight made no sense whatsoever.

It wasn't an off-taste, it tasted wrong, like a slight chlorine bleach undertone. No adverse reaction and I only found out by going to the site to see if there were any complaints. Never saw anything in the news, etc.

Nothing like trying a new product for the first time then finding out the company behind it has a recall out :(

Luckily I didn't get the tainted fat-free yogurt. I got the "whole milk-organic-cream on top" *plain* yogurt. It had a UPC code 5215900001, and MAY 26 09 19:42 #41 is on the edge of the lid.

I only got the Stonyfield yogurt because the store was out of Dannon plain yogurt, which I've been eating for the last thirty years.

Big mistake. In comparison, the Stonyfield plain yogurt was gloppy and tasted like bland mayonnaise. The Dannon plain yogurt has a crisp texture (you leave a hole in it when you scoop out a spoonful) and very pleasing tart taste, almost lemony to me.

Recall or no recall, just be aware that there is one whopping big difference in taste and consistency of Dannon plain and Stonyfield plain yogurt. -- dominic
