In his years exploring the depths of the ocean, free-diver Tom Powers has seen all manners of beasts, including great white sharks and black sea bass as big as a Volkswagen Beetle. But he had never seen a monster like the one he snatched off Santa Rosa Island near Santa Barbara a few weeks ago.
