There’s flame retardant in your Mountain Dew. That soda with the lime-green hue (and other citrus-flavored bubbly pops) won’t keep your insides fireproof, but it does contain brominated vegetable oil, a patented flame retardant for plastics that has been banned in foods throughout Europe and in Japan.

Brominated vegetable oil, or BVO, which acts as an emulsifier in citrus-flavored soda drinks, is found in about 10 percent of sodas sold in the U.S.

“After a few extreme soda binges — not too far from what many [video] gamers regularly consume – a few patients have needed medical attention for skin lesions, memory loss and nerve disorders, all symptoms of overexposure to bromine,” according to a recent article in Environmental News. - ABC

Actually, Martin's Daughter Rene Estevez is a trained pastry chef. (Maybe that's why President Bartlett is such a foodie!) Although she does some acting (she has been in the West Wing as Nancy), she'll be known in my heart for this wonderful cheesecake. Yeah, it maybe Martin's favorite, it's one of mine as well. A cheesecake fit for a President!

Martin Sheen's Favorite Pumpkin Cheesecake

For Crust

9 whole graham crackers broken (about 4 ounces)

1/4 cup sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

4 tablespoons butter, melted

For Filling

4 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, at room temperature

1 1/2 cups sugar

3 large eggs

1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree (not pie filling)

1 cup heavy cream

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon ground allspice

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1 hour 45 minutes 15 mins prep

To make the Crust:

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Wrap a couble layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil around the outside of a 10-inch sprinform pan. (The idea is to make it watertight). This is very important or you will have a soggy crust.

Combine the graham crackers, sugar, and cinnamon in a food processor.

Process until the graham crackers are very finely ground.

Drizzle the melted butter over.

Pulse until the crumbs begin to stick together.

Press the crumbs over the bottom (not the sides) of the prepared pan.

Bake in the middle of the oven until the crust is slightly golden, about 10 minutes.

Transfer to a wire rack and cool while preparing the filling.

To make the Filling:

Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese and sugar in a large bowl until smooth and fluffy.

Beat the eggs one at a time.

Add the pumpkin and the remaining ingredients.

Beat just until mixed.

Pour the filing into the prepared crust.

Place the springform pan in a large roasting pan and add hot water to come halfway up the sides of the springform pan.

Bake the cheesecake until the filling is slightly puffed and softly set and the top is golden, about 1 1/2 hours.

Transfer the cheesecake to a wire rack to cool.

Cover and refrigerate the cake overnight.

Use a knife to cut around the side of the pan to loosen the cheesecake.

Release the pan sides, cut the cheesecake into wedges, and serve.

Pasolivo is being sold to pay Estate Financial victims

I love their olive oil...I hate the former owners' wrong doing. How can someone defraud "Meals on Wheels?"

A court-ordered sale is now under way for the Pasolivo olive oil business and its surrounding 131 acres to help pay back victims of the collapsed Paso Robles lender Estate Financial.

The sale is being conducted in two rounds, the first of which ended last week and was intended to qualify buyers, according to a fact sheet for prospective purchasers.

...Guth and her son, Joshua Yaguda, were sentenced in December 2009 to 12 and eight years in state prison, respectively, for defrauding tens of millions of dollars from hundreds of the lender’s investors — most of whom were elderly — in a Ponzi scheme.

Pasolivo and its property were part of Guth’s personal assets, and proceeds of the sale would go toward paying back Estate Financial victims, said Andrew T. Feola, a vice president at Beverly Hills-based Geringer Capital, which is handling the transaction. - San Luis Tribune

Odds are, if you bought it at a grocery story, it isn't.

More than three-fourths of the honey sold in U.S. grocery stores isn't exactly what the bees produce, according to testing done exclusively for Food Safety News.

The results show that the pollen frequently has been filtered out of products labeled "honey." The removal of these microscopic particles from deep within a flower would make the nectar flunk the quality standards set by most of the world's food safety agencies.

The food safety divisions of the World Health Organization, the European Commission and dozens of others also have ruled that without pollen there is no way to determine whether the honey came from legitimate and safe sources. - Food Safety News

The Santa Barbara Public Market will be developed with San Francisco's Ferry Building as a model. Seems only fitting as Margaret Caferelli, of Urban Developments, is a part-time San Francisco resident and the company itself is based in The City.

The complete project, Alma del Pueblo, is a mixed usage project with living space above the market. Think how cool it would be to just stroll downstairs to pick up fresh beef, veggies and baked items.

Norbert Moniz, former chef at Spiritland Bistro here in Santa Barbara, is now working at Top Chef Stephanie Izard's restaurant in Chicago.

How did a vegetarian from Canyon Country end up as the butcher for one of the nation’s hottest restaurants?

If you’re Norbert Moniz, who graduated from Canyon High School in 2007, you follow your heart and your taste buds wherever they may take you.

For Moniz, that’s meant the beaches of Santa Barbara, the mountains of Mammoth, and finally, the city streets of Chicago, where he now works at the highly acclaimed Girl & The Goat, owned and operated by Stephanie Izard. Izard is the fourth-season winner of Bravo television’s Emmy Award-winning reality competition program “Top Chef.”

“I love the intensity you get in the kitchen, with everyone breathing down your neck, trying to be as fast as you can. Everyone is so different, you just get the most insane people working by your side,” Moniz said with a laugh. “It’s just a blast.”

His start in the culinary world was humble. Moniz’s first job was as a dishwasher and busboy at Farrell’s in Saugus, where he eventually became a short order cook.

Still, Moniz was inspired enough to enroll at San Francisco’s Le Cordon Bleu, where he graduated in 2008.

After a brief stint in Ventura, Moniz moved to Mammoth, where he worked at the Whitebark restaurant.

....In 2009, Moniz headed to sunnier climes, landing at Spiritland Bistro, a vegetarian restaurant in Santa Barbara, where he spent six months as the sous chef, and six months as the head chef.

“That was pretty cool, at age 20. The owner let me have my own kitchen and bring in my own staff. It was fun trying to figure out how to make things work. There was a lot of trial and error,” Moniz said.

Built in 1886, Mattei's Tavern was a meeting and dining spot for locals and a resting place for travelers.

There you'll find the restaurant's co-owners and chefs, Matt and Jeff Nichols, turning out an innovative mix of dishes with seasonal, local ingredients. While they share kitchen duties, Matt handles the wine and beverage program, and Jeff is responsible for the business side of the restaurant.

Over the years, both brothers, who grew up in Ames, Iowa, alongside four other siblings, have done stints and mastered their culinary skills in many professional kitchens around the country.

"I always knew I wanted to be chef," says Jeff, 48. Matt, 45, on the other hand didn't have such a vision. Both started out as teenagers washing dishes at restaurants.

"In the course of two and a half years, I went from being a driver to kitchen manager at Spago." The highlight of his six years there came in 1995 when Wolfgang Puck put him in charge of managing the menu served at the Academy Awards Governors Ball.

The brothers' love affair with Santa Barbara wine country dates to 1996 when they were invited to cook a food-and-wine pairing dinner at Andrew Murray Vineyards.

"The wine dinner, a success, was our first time together in the kitchen as chefs," notes Matt. Encouraged by local guests at the dinner to open a restaurant in the Santa Ynez Valley, they began searching for a location.

In July 1996, they opened Brothers Restaurant Solvang in the Storybook Inn Bed and Breakast with a simple menu. "We developed our own style. Our food became influenced by our childhood food memories and by our different backgrounds in our culinary journeys," notes Matt.

...Now you can whip up some of their restaurant creations at home with favorites found in their recently released first cookbook, "Brothers Cuisine, Recipes from Santa Barbara, California Wine Country," (Nichols Brothers Restaurant; $34.95).

The book, an outgrowth of diner requests, is a collection of their most sought-after recipes, says Jeff. The 145 recipes range from simple to complicated.

"We've downsized the recipes, but they are done the way we do them at the restaurant," notes Matt, adding "our style of cooking is really approachable." - The Daily News

...."It's a fruit," she says matter-of-factly. "And did you know that it has the highest protein content of all fruit?"

These are just two of the pronouncements to come from Cusick, a seemingly mild-mannered marketing director and mother of 11-year-old twins for whom the Avocado Diva has become not only an online business but an alter ego intent on changing the way we eat — and think about — avocados.

"Avocado Diva specializes in heritage avocados from small ranches and farms," she said. "Sometimes there may be only one or two trees, but what they are growing is unique and delicious. "

Cusick's inner green diva emerged after a chance meeting with rancher Jim Lewis at the Moorpark farmers market.

Lewis grows the popular Hass avocado in addition to such lesser-known varieties as Bacon, Frey and Zutano on his 12 - acre property on La Loma Avenue in Somis.

Lewis' Hass avocados typically are spoken for by a cooperative that sells them to mainstream supermarkets and other outlets. But Lewis told Cusick he was having so much trouble selling the other varieties on a similarly large scale that he was thinking of tearing out the trees, some of which date back to the ranch's original plantings nearly 60 years ago.

This struck a dissonant chord with Cusick, who laments that there are no Moorpark apricots growing in Moorpark, and that the Peach Hill neighborhood has no peach trees, she said.

"I'm a fourth-generation Ventura County girl. My great-grandfather came out here during the Dust Bowl. And my grandfather worked on the Lynn Ranch, as well as others. Hearing a farmer talk about ripping out his heritage avocado trees just tugged at me," said Cusick.

"I decided to try and sell them online as a way to make money and to help preserve these kinds of avocados before they all go away," she added.

Thus was born Avocado Diva.com, the website through which Cusick sells fruit she has found growing in a patchwork of small orchards stretching from Ventura County to Morro Bay near San Luis Obispo. - Ventura County Star

Designed by Stiles Clements, the shiny new Gelson’s Market was modernistic in design and had the air of a building set in a tropic land. Inside, from roof to floor, the market’s front had a glassed instead of a cement front, an industry first. It was completely air-conditioned and heated. Huge circulating fans and giant heaters guaranteed a complete circulation of clean, fresh air of proper temperature every five minutes. Specially designed fixtures in all departments afforded ample display of the peerless selection of items which Gelson’s handled.

Spacious aisles — which would become a Gelson’s hallmark — and large shopping carts were available to make shoppers’ selection of merchandise a pleasure. The first Gelson’s also set the stage for what would become Gelson’s tradition of exemplary meat and seafood. The store had an ultra-modern, self-service Meat Department, with stainless steel and enamel cases running the building’s full length. Behind these cases, in full view of the customers — when you’ve got it, flaunt it! — was the meat cutting and wrapping room. - Gelson's

As you know, local governments throughout California, other states and even other countries have placed bans and/or taxes on single-use plastic bags due to their environmental impact. Will Santa Barbara finally join the game? This is UP TO US!!!

Options for City Council include a) Mandating that local stores implement a 'Where's Your Bag' campaign, b) Placing a voter approved tax on bags, and c) an outright ban.

Join the Community Environmental Council, SB ChannelKeeper, Surfrider, Save the Mermaids and others to make sure that ONE of these options is selected!

Chocolate Opulence is the dream-concept of owner and chocolate connoisseur Terry Perretz. His goal is to make fine, French artisan chocolates available to everyone. His motto is, “Fine chocolate is an indulgence that everyone should be able to experience!”

After flirting with a new image as a ritzy shopping center, Santa Barbara’s La Cumbre Plaza is returning to humbler roots. The mall on La Cumbre Road and upper State Street is welcoming retailers from across the price spectrum, owner Macerich told me, as it tries to attract new tenants to the space vacated by Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse at the end of June.

Ruth’s Chris — the largest luxury steakhouse chain in the U.S. — was one of several upscale tenants brought in over the last several years as La Cumbre worked to reposition itself as a high-end shopping spot. Other newcomers included designer brand Louis Vuitton and jewelry retailer Tiffany’s & Co. — both of which are still at the center. But as the economy sputtered to a halt and consumers pulled back on spending, Ruth’s Chris apparently suffered. After three years in business, it shuttered its doors at the end of June.

Meanwhile, La Cumbre operator Macerich is conceding that with consumers still cautious, it may be time to reconsider its earlier makeover attempts. Anchored by Sears and Vons, La Cumbre “has opened up with the change in the economy,” mall spokeswoman Mary-Lynn Harms told me, and is no longer limiting its consideration of new tenants to upscale retail. - Pacific Coast Business Times
