Lazy Acres parent company, Supervalue

sells the Bristol Farms chain, which includes Lazy Acres.

Supermarket operator Supervalu Inc. said Friday it has sold its Bristol Farms chain to that division's management team in partnership with investment firm Endeavour Capital.

Bristol Farms, a southern California based grocery retailer formed in 1982, now operates 13 Bristol Farms stores and one Lazy Acres store. The locations will continue to operate under their current names with existing local management and employee base. - BusinessWeek

....In 2004, Albertsons bought the chain for an undisclosed amount. At the time, Albertsons had been waging an increasingly tough battle not only with other conventional grocery chains but also with mass merchandisers such as Wal-Mart and Costco that were becoming a force in groceries using cut-rate prices.

The goal had been to give Albertsons "the ability to operate smaller-format stores in wealthier neighborhoods and differentiate themselves not based on price but on quality and service," said Lloyd Greif, president of Greif & Co., a Los Angeles investment bank that put together both the 2004 deal and the most recent sale.

The corporate marriage "looked good on paper," Greif said, but was less so in practice. Burdened with aging stores and growing competition, Albertsons was sold in 2006 and broken into three pieces as part of an $11.1-billion deal plus the assumption of $6.3 billion in debt. Supervalu acquired more than 1,100 stores, including the 270 Albertsons and Bristol Farms markets in Southern California.

Bristol Farms "became a corporate orphan," Greif said. "It didn't fit in with the strategy to compete for customers on price." - Latte Times

An olive oil shop, looking a bit too similar to Il Fustino (complete with stainless steel fustis) is opening up in Paseo Nuevo. They are still under construction, but I managed to get a peek through the butcher paper covering the windows.

Stonyfield Yogurt unveils new cup

and it's not petroleum based. It's made of corn.

A lot goes into a package of yogurt, apparently.

And I don't mean the yogurt. I mean the package.

Last week, New Hampshire organic yogurt maker Stonyfield Farm unveiled new cups, ones that industry experts say put them at the top of the packaging game.

The cups, used for their multipacks, are plant-based, not petroleum-based.

The specific plant is corn - GreenSpace Philadelphia Inquirer

Trick or Tweet this Halloween

An idea from Twitterforfood.
Here's an old idea with a new twist to fight hunger this Halloween:

Leave a paper grocery bag with people in your neighborhood with instructions to fill the bag with canned food for your food bank and that you'll be by on Halloween to pick the bag up. You can make your own sheet to put on the bag or use this one from twitterforfood.com.

If just one person per neighborhood did this, think of all the food we could collect for local food banks! I know some are already doing this, but let's make a big push on twitter to make this happen across the country!

My Favorite Candidate, Das Williams, is endorsed by the SB Indy

The Santa Barbara Independent has endorsed Das for State Assembly on the November ballot.

Few Santa Barbara politicians come as prepared, equipped, and temperamentally suited to serve in Sacramento as Das Williams, the politically restless progressive now holding down the left end of the Santa Barbara City Council. Williams is both pragmatist and ideologue, meaning he can grandstand with the best of them but also get things done. With local roots running deep, Williams will remain accessible once ensconced in the weird Twilight Zone of Sacramento. Constituent calls will be returned; their issues, addressed. The same cannot be said for the recent occupant of that seat.

Iranian pistachios have been banned

which is boosting California pistachio sales. Did you know that 98% of U.S. pistachios come from the Golden State?
California pistachio growers are finding themselves the unexpected beneficiaries of U.S. trade sanctions against Iran. A U.S. ban on Iranian pistachios went into effect on Wednesday, as the Obama administration ratchets up economic pressure on Iran to open its nuclear facilities to international inspection. President Obama signed the ban on July 1. It's good news for American pistachio farmers, who have long vied with Iran for dominance in the U.S.'s $700-million domestic market, as well as overseas. And it's particularly welcome for Golden State farmers, who are in the midst of harvest season. - LatteTimes
I, myself, am partial to our local growers Santa Barbara Pistachios. I pick them up at our Farmer's Market pretty much every Saturday. (Yes...I gobble them up that fast..) My favorite? The Chile Lemon!
